Conez and Coneyz open on Frankfort

by Robin Garr » Fri Jul 10, 2009 2:20 pm

Conez & Coneyz has opened in the former Café Glacé at 2716 1/2 Frankfort Ave., and they offer a pretty good selection of about a dozen hot dogs ranging in price from $3.05 to $3.75, depending on toppings, plus a variety of soft-serv "conez" including a few fancier desserts.

The dogs are good quality, with a choice of New York-style "snap" dogs, Hebrew National beef dogs or kielbasa. The pictured Chicago Dog fell short of Lonnie's mostly because it was served on a generic white bun, not the traditional poppyseed bun, but the snap dog was snappy, the toppings were right (including the authentic neon-green relish and "sport" peppers), and the price ($3.25) was more than fair.

Tiny counter-service place with just three or four small tables, but I wish them well. It's very handy to my neighborhood, just two doors from Heine Bros. Coffee, and I can see picking up a dog there now and then.

I haven't tried it, David, but The Tijuana dog ($3.75) is made with guacamole and bacon.

Re: Conez and Coneyz open on Frankfort-now with vegan dogs

Went to Conez and Coneyz for ice cream yesterday after eating at Fat Jimmy's. They have a fairly large ice cream selection, at least 20 flavors. My daughter got the Blue Moon-bright blue, but had a pistachio-y taste.
We noticed a sign saying they now have vegan hot dogs and vegan chili, due to overwhelming demand. The guy said they're selling the heck out of them. So, you can go even if you're not a traditional hot dog eater!
I know the gelato place was there, but this place seems to have a larger flavor selection, the owner was really nice, and I'm glad there's finally an ice cream place in Crescent Hill (it always seemed weird that there wasn't an ice cream shop anywhere along the Frankfort/Clifton strip).

Took the vegetarian wife there Saturday and she was impressed with the vegan hot dogs. For her to be happy about food is a momentous occasion. See, she eats to live while I on the other hand Live to eat! Growing up in NJ, I appreciated the good hot dogs. I still miss Sabrets cooked for hours in 3 day old kraut water! I had the Chili dog. Good chili that didn't repeat on me like some of the cheaper ones giving you another warm meal later that day. Followed it with the Eskimo Kiss coconut ice cream! Met the owners, great bunch of folks. Good luck to them and see them soon.

Talking to the Owner/Operator Nadine, she was grateful for the write-up by Robin, and wants everyone to know they have 24 flavours. Nice to see the Veg & Vegan options have made it to the voice stream,

Nadine has taken note of Robin's missing the poppy seeds on the bun. She says (I am speaking for her as she does not do computers, she does food) that her lunch customers tell her they are grateful for the lack as they don't have to worry about going back to work pickin' all day. But she hears Robin, and wanted me to ask the forum and customers their thoughts on the seeds as a topping similar to the addition of celery salt? If it is based on taste and not the texture, individual qualities of the bread but the dog as a whole?

What shall I advise our local, open-eared business-woman who has the power to drown us in chili and deny us ice cream in waffle conez? Thanks~

Poppy seeds. Definitely.
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
