For NY lovers only

OK- I know this has NOTHING at all to do with Louisville but I thought I'd post it for all the transplanted NYers in the forum. It's the sad end of a tasty empire.

Sadness, I too grew up on those "S" cookies. Which also reminds me of Devil Dogs... the world's perfect food. Never could find them outside of the east coast...

Stella D'Oro was a New York land mark and brought some notoriety to the Bronx which besides Riverdale, The Yankees, and places like Stella D'Oro, received terrible press.

Stella D'Oro used to have an earthy restaurant attached to its bakery and I had my first glass of wine there when I was around 12 years old.

If we are not careful, homogeny and this recession will cause many institutions to collapse. It just emphasizes the point that independently owned businesses must be supported in every community!

To think, endless coverage of the passing of Michael Jackson and this truly important and sad story has been so overlooked!!!

Nooooooo! Stella D'Oro are my favorites! Swiss Fudge, Marguerite, Breakfast Cookies, Pfefferneuse. Mom better run to the store tomorrow and stockpile my favorites.

If you mean springerles, then yes! All the Heitzman's locations carry them, I believe - but maybe only around Easter?

If indeed it is springerles that you are looking for, they are usually available around Christmas. Heintzman's has had them around the holidays. Bussman's Bakery on lower Frankfort Ave. used to have them year around. They were my Dad's favorite cookie and I always took them when I went home.

At least we can still get the black and white cookies... my wife and I picked up a few for our boys this morning on 55th Street @ 7th avenue.

And speaking of the article and its "industrial spaces need to be more flexible..." opinion, I understand the old Domino Sugar building(s) on the East River are being turned into luxury condos... Maybe to mollify the nostalgic among us, the new developers are going to put the huge Domino Sugar sign on top of the condos. I'm sure this satisfies the displaced workforce (sarcasm). Sad all around.
