bbq worth a drive

by Melissa S » Tue Jun 23, 2009 7:36 pm

My inlaws are in town and would like to take a "nice drive" and get great bbq. They prefer more of a country landscape for the drive. Any recommondations?

Honey's in Lucas on 31E around Barren River State park is good, but thats a long way for BBQ... Shack in the Back in Fairdale is good but not too far out... there's that Ken Tex place in Shelbyville thats good although I've not been there..

I was at Ken Tex last year it was ok but I wouldn't make the trip back just to go there.

These probably don't have the drive you'r looking for but, we like Jimbo's on Kenwood Drive and Mark's Feed Store(the one in Middletown), both are usually very consistent in food and service. :D

Again, pretty far, but Billy's BBQ in Lexington is great, and you could take in some horse farm country.

I would suggest Bootleg bbq in Mt Washington. If you are willing to make the drive to Owensboro try Moonlight, the mecca of Ky bbq.

I delivered a cake to LaGrange, KY last month, and saw an intriguing-looking bbq place downtown. It was a white building with red trim and a lot of signage - it had a drive-thru. I nearly stopped to check it out on my way back, but it was on the wrong side of the road at that point and I just drove by. Some googling reveals three or four 'cue restaurants in LaGrange, but I think this one might have been "Backwoods Barbecue".

Of course, I took the highway, but I assume you could take LaGrange Road all the way there from St. Matthews - can anybody confirm this?

That was probably Big R's, Marsha. They are closing up shop at that location and moving to newer digs right around the corner on Main. They will be in the space where the Heavenly Dog used to be. More dining space, bigger kitchen and they have applied for the "moist" alcohol license available here in OC. The Winstead family has some of the best ribs around the area and I highly recommend the potato salad.

Backwoods BBQ was in the space now currently occupied by Steve-O's Buckner location. Steve has a 2nd location open now over at 6402 Westwind Way, Suite 8 in Crestwood. We haven't gotten over to that one yet but I think it is in the same mall as Kroger. DOes anyone know?

Hickory Pit is better than Moonlight BBQ if one is to make the trek to Owensboro.

Yes, you can take backroads all the way from Louisville to Lagrange- the Rt 42 drive is very scenic. You could also stop at Bray's Orchards on the way back and get some local produce ( peaches may be in) and homemade icecream at their little shop. We make a trip out every summer to do just that.

Ed, that sounds more like it. Big R's - that was it. It smelled delicious!

Melissa,
We are not strictly a BBQ place but can offer you a little bit more. Plus the drive is the best around.

Or simply drive way out somewhere and turnaround, then head back for KBC on Frankfort.

My wife and I were just saying that instead of roller coaster trips or art museum trips, let's go to Austin, TX area and eat real texas que for a week.

Ed,
Steve O's new place is in the same shopping strip as Arbor Ridge in Crestwood on the opposite end.

They went to Big R's in LaGrange and loved both the scenic ride and the bbq. Thanks for all of your suggestions.

I'll second the drive, and the food is outstanding (certainly above "BBQ joint" though).
