Cheap BBQ in New Albany this weekend

by Steve P » Tue Jun 23, 2009 10:43 am

Fellow Byters,

After having to cancel our participation in last weeks J-ville contest, The Rolling Bones will be attempting to get this years midwest tour off the ground again this weekend. We will be competing at the (what else) "Blues, Cruise and BBQ" contest (hey, I don't name these things, I just cook at 'em) at Northside Christian Church in New Albany this weekend.

Of interest to forum-byters the organizers will be serving a very reasonably priced BBQ dinner. Pulled Pork and Pulled Chicken "two handed sandwiches" will be $3.00, Sides and dessert will be $1.00 ea. (corn on the cob, baked beans, green beans, strawberry shortcake and a few other items). They will be serving tea, "lemon shake ups" and fountain drinks of $1 and $2. The meat will be prepared by one of the competitors (who has a good reputation for turning out some good "Q"), the sides will be prepared by church volunteers. Proceeds will benefit the Local Food Pantry of Southern Indiana and the youth ministry. Please note that this appears to be a family friendly event and there will NOT be a beer tent.

(Note: The minister has spoken to the Lord on our behalf and given the good cause God has seen fit to give the competitors a waiver and allow us to discretely consume alcohol in our cooking area during the competition...Just thought I'd mention this so none of you would think we were going to burn in hell for enjoying a couple of barley pops on church grounds).

The contest starts at 6pm on Friday 6/26 at Northside Christian Church (4407 Charlestown Rd, New Albany Indiana 47150) and ends with the awards presentations at 3pm on Saturday 6/27. There will be a car show beginning at 6pm on Friday. The organizers website also mentions a "children's play area" (I imagine for free but don't hold me to that). Bands will begin at 6pm and the schedule is as follows:

Friday
6pm - 8pm The King Bees
8pm -10pm Travelin Mojos

Saturday
9am - 11am The Boogie Men
11am-1pm Lamont Gillespie and 100 Proof Blues
1pm -3pm Da Mudcats

As always, the competitors are NOT permitted to give out samples to the "general public". THAT being said our last meat turn-in is at 1:30pm on Saturday and we typically have a LOT of meat leftover. If any forum-byte "regulars" (i.e. friends) stop by our cooking area between 1:30 and 3pm on Saturday we will TRY to slip you a sample of something tasty...Just look for the "Rolling Bones" banner. Ya'll are welcome to stop by and say "hi" anytime during the competition.

Wow this sounds cool, family friendly, and for a good cause. And the prices are DEFINITELY family friendly. Plus, church women can cook, so the sides will probably be good. This sounds like a nice place to check out this weekend. One question: Is there an entrance fee to attend?

P.S. This one made my husband and i laugh so much!

Admission is FREE.

Glad you enjoyed my attempt at humor. Seriously, I wasn't going ANYWHERE near a church with a can of beer until I got the word from up high. Only thing is we can't call it beer...We have to call it Holy (Gr)Ale.

Just a little "bump" here for a good cause.

In addition to the above mentioned activities, the organizers will be accepting donations of canned food for the local food pantry. If ya'll come out for the bbq and music please consider helping out with a small canned food donation.

Hope to see some forum members this weekend...Come on out and see a grown man collapse from the heat :P (NOTE: We -are- very busy on Saturday morning/early afternoon with the competition but we'll have plenty of time to visit after the last turn-in at 1 or 1:30pm.

Peace, Love and BBQ

Steve,
Thanks for the heads up on this festival the bbq was great, music was good, and lots of great cars. If we could have turned the heat down about 10 degrees it would have been perfect. It was good to meet you and Becky. We will definately put this on our calendar for next year!
:D Thanks again,

Karen,

Thanks for stopping by. It's always nice to be able to associate a name with a face on these forums. Andrea and her hubby and two of the cutest little boys you've ever seen also stopped by just as we were packing up. (THANKS for the cookies Andrea). I agree with your assessment of the experience, except I might have wished for 15 degrees cooler. We were an absolute WRECK from the heat and lack of sleep by the time Saturday afternoon rolled around.
