This is in interesting, if rather PR-ish, travel lure about seven Kentucky restaurants including the two historic Louisville hotel dining rooms. I'm not sure I'd really want visiting "foodies" to judge Kentucky's entire culinary scene on the basis of this random group, but it certainly offers a picture of fine living in Old Kaintuck ...

The Tavern, naturally named for Daniel, celebrated its 100th anniversary in March and continues to provide guests with traditional and creative southern cuisine. Their signature “Chicken Flakes in a Bird’s Nest”— a rich, creamy dish served in a nest of crispy potatoes -- and the much-loved, melt-in-your-mouth spoonbread served piping hot, maintain prominent positions on the menu. Doe Run Inn’s menu includes lots of Southern fare like fried chicken, pulled pork, smoked brisket, and country ham balls with lots of sides from which to choose. Beaumont Inn and Science Hill are obvious omissions that I would rate above several on that list.

Our last experience at "Old Talbott Tavern" was frankly bad. I've heard very little about the Old Stone Inn in it's current incarnation.

I can agree with all of them except Boone Tavern. My daughter went to school in Berea and while she loved the school and I loved the town of Berea, Boone Tavern was always disappointing culinary wise. Yes the students work there and the service is fine, the hotel is charming but the food is dull dull dull . And what is all the excitement about spoonbread anyway?
My advice is to stay at Boone Tavern but eat at the little Main Street Cafe found on the same block as Boone Tavern but around the corner.

Old Talbott Tavern does not belong on this list. I live in Bardstown and would never recommend that place.

The Harlan Sander's Cafe isn't much to write home about. The food & menu is exactly the same as any KFC.

Easy guys, historic doesn't always mean good. I grew up a few blocks from "historic" Farmington and could give two craps about it, I'd rather go to Beargrass Creek. 8)

I view the term "historic" as having some relevance to the food. In other words, is the food rooted in the cultural traditions of the state? From that point of view it's not a horrible list but it's terribly incomplete and 2 or 3 of those places serve very little that I would call delicious.

The Oak Room and English Grill are interesting additions in that they represent some of the best food in Louisville and try to source locally - especially since the rest of the state disavows Louisville.

The anti-Louisville bias in the rest of the state (not shared by everyone, obviously) is kind of sad. When the city only gets back a small fraction of the taxes it pays to the state, a simple "Thank you" would suffice.

I spent most of my life growing up in Berea, and worked in the kitchen at Boone Tavern (unofficially) as relief help while working at the college's cafeteria... While it did serve as a fundamental reason for my desire to pursue a higher education in the food arts, I've longed to see it rise to it's proper potential.

I watched a video on the hotel's website not too long ago about their renovation, in particular the upgrades to the kitchen. It's pretty amazing to see what they have done with the place - compared to the old, greasy downtrodden kitchen I once worked in... But I still long for so much more for the restaurant.

It's entirely possible to have a fantastic restaurant in a town as small as Berea - serving fantastic, inspired food. you just have to have someone who is capable of it, who believes in it and can do it in a manner that works.

I can tell you that very few locals eat there outside of holidays... so the locale limitations are not as bad as some places could be. You're catering almost entirely to tourists.
