Dads: What is YOUR idea of a great fathers day

by Steve P » Thu Jun 18, 2009 8:54 pm

I'm probably going to get black listed for this but I'm really curious...Am I the only father who HATES the idea of going out for dinner on Father's Day ? My idea of a perfect Father's Day has always been to spend some quality time with my girls, put something "special" on the grill (Lobster, aged beef, etc), kick back on the deck and enjoy a couple of beers and a nice cigar. Fighting crowds at some restaurant that I probably had NO input in selecting is so far down the food chain that it doesn't even register.

We're trying the brunch at Churchill Downs this year because my dad loves horse racing.

Amen, Brother Steve. You hit the nail right on the head. I plan on cooking some ribs, drinking some beer, and taking it easy on Sunday.

We go through this every year. Me: "What do you want to do?" Him: "Nothing, really hang out." "Really?"
Then I make a reservation somewhere.

This year I am taking him at his word. I plan to go get a growler of good beer. Grill some scallops and steaks and hope he enjoys. As a mother, mother's day is my one day "off" and I want someone else to cook and do the dishes. I am guessing as a dad, he just wants to chill. Hope so anyway!

I guess this may sound stupid but here it is: I'm just incredibly happy to be a Dad. I have alot of friends, peers, co-workers who wanted to be a Dad (and/or Mom) but things didn't work out for a myriad of reasons. My perfect day would have us grilling something and telling stories. I'm incredibly proud of my family so spending time at home with them is good enough for me. Anyway, Happy Fathers Day to all!

Yeah, probably my ideal would be to hang with my two boys (ages 6 and 1), and kick back and RELAX. Working too much lately!!

My perfect father's day is to wake up early in the morning, have coffee poolside, take my kid's (4 & 9 years old) fishing.

My 9 year old son wants to make me lunch, he makes a mean grilled cheese and chicken noodle soup out of a can.

Grill out later that evening, or have a fish fry if we catch anything good.

Play with them until bedtime, they don't stay this young long.

I don't want to see a restaurant, since I have worked in them for almost 20 years.

Fishing in the morning and dinner with the wife and kids, and maybe a few beers for good measure.

I sincerely hope that all you dads at there that love being a dad (my dad was like that) have the greatest Father's Day ever!

Here's to all the men that taught us how to bait a hook, change a tire, never give up, smile in the face of defeat, humility in triumph, to measure twice - cut once, righty tighty, lefty loosey, leaving the toilet seat DOWN after using, that grown men might cry but by god they still carry on, never eat yellow snow, open the door for a lady (even if you know she's not a lady), never drink anything pink, never cut the grass too short in summer, moss on the north side of trees, and that humor, time and a sincere apology are sometimes the best medicine.

I miss you Daddy.

Great post Carla. Should be a song.

I am going to take the family out on the boat and then cook some food for my Dad and Mom. Ruth wants to buy me a new chainsaw...I love the idea but I had to ask if that is like getting new washing machine for mothers day.

Dude, its a chainsaw. It is gas powered, and cuts things down quickly. Perfect father's day gift! :D

From my experience, women draw a distinction between appliances* (washing machine) and toys (earrings). For men, there is only one category -- toys. Probably speaks to the gendered history of domestic roles more than anything else.

* Now an "appliance" can be a toy if it fits a hobby. Say, an ice cream maker, for someone who likes kitchen gadgets.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.
