Stand alone, rural, roadside snack shops?

by Bryan Shepherd » Mon Jun 15, 2009 5:35 pm

Not sure of the correct terminology, but I have a question. It seems that my travels in Southern Indiana occasionally take me past these little snack shops/ice cream shops along several two lane highways, mostly in the Floyd's Knobs/Georgetown area.

Here is my question:

Can anyone name the different shacks along with street/town in the area? It can be anywhere fairly close (1 to 1.5 hours). While I haven't stopped at any of these spots other than the ice cream shop at the corner of Paoli Pike and scottsville Rd, these roadside eateries are Americana at its best and something you just can't get in the middle of the city.

It is almost like taking a trip back in time, when things may (or may not) have been simpler.........or it could just be me thinking a little road trippin' with your favorite music and no worries is a great time to spend with the family. And all of this is only a few miles down the road..........

Polly's Freeze is literally a time-travel trip back into the '60s! There's another nice place, A.J.'s Coffee & Cream (which actually specializes in excellent gyros) at the same exit from I-64 but a mile or so in the other direction. I hope it's still around. Summer time ... ought to get out that way and check them both out.

These HotBytes reviews (especially Polly's) aren't new, but the whole point is that these places don't change much.

i have been too down to post lately, but i MUST second Mom and Pop's. It is a family tradition for us, we go there every summer. And it is awesome. Stand in line, get your goodies, and just sit there and enjoy. very nice.....

I believe A.J. is still there. We're new to Indiucky (prefer that to Kentuckiana  ) and will have to make it a point to stop there and Polly's the next time we're driving through to the big city.

I went to a place in Leitchfield (sp?), I think on the east side of town, but can't remember the name. I don't make it down there very often. Corn dogs, ice cream, that kind of stuff...

This would be traveling from East to West along State Rd 64. It would be a pretty nice drive and could end at Jasper, IN for dinner ( http://www.schnitzelbank.com/),if you had any room left or at French Lick (http://www.frenchlick.com/casino/index.jsp) for some gambling.
