CJ finds kind 2 1/2 stars for Sol Aztecas

by Robin Garr » Sat Jun 13, 2009 9:52 am

Marty seems to find it hard to go negative ... a close reading of today's review of the two Sol Aztecas properties makes his 2 1/2 star rating seem fair or maybe a little generous, but the nitpicks are so buried under kind words that it takes a little reading between the lines before the rating makes sense. I wonder if this is a matter of basic kindness, or Gannett's desire to keep advertisers happy.

Gotta be about the advertisers. I ate there once and didn't like it. Then I worked a couple months with a restaurant supplier and delivered rice and beans there once... needless to say, after looking at the kitchen I see why I didn't like the food and will NEVER eat there again.

EDIT: I misread, I was referring to los aztecas... woops

We ate there once when we were planning on eating at El Mundo and the wait was too long. I think 2 1/2 stars was more than generous.

Is this the same place on 5th and Market? If so, the last time I went there I was served spoiled pork and they wouldn't take it off my bill. At the time I couldn't explain it in Spanish (I can now) but it was very frustrating. They wouldn't take it off my bill!

Los Aztecas and Sol Aztecas are close kin ... as I recall, they have overlapping ownership but different partners, and their menus and overall style are very much alike.

I was wondering about that, seemed like they were connected somehow. No matter, My Patria and the gordita trailer get all my Mexican food money. :D

I'm with you on that! Don't forget some of the other "real" taquerias and Mexican eateries, though. Rosticeria Luna, La Tapatia, El Paso Cafe, Buenos Dias Cafe, la Herradura, Perla del Pacifico. and Los Toreados when it's open. I try to spread the pesos, er, dollars around.

Taquerias

Robin,

Lolita's near Watterson X on Poplar Level has been around a while as well.

Re: La Herradura - I've eaten their yummy tortas but am not often on Eastern Blvd in Clarksville. I've not seen their sign the last few times and just tried the number I had and it is no longer in service. I hope the proprietors went on to bigger / better...

Sorry to hear about La Herradura, Lonnie. It was the first taqueria on Eastern Boulevard, as I recall, and I'm sorry to see it go.

I like Lolita's - in fact, we took a group of friends over there and filled up the place just a couple of weeks ago after taking the new tour of the "Mega Caverns" under the Zoo. I wouldn't consider it a taqueria, though - it's specifically a Los Angeles-style burrito house, which is ALSO a good thing.

I know it's not an authentic taqueria, but for the neighborhood we find Mexico Viejo down on Lower Brownsboro to be MUCH better than Sol Aztecas and their prices are much more reasonable as well!

I just don't understand paying more $$$ at Sol Aztecas for the same food you would get for less $$ at Los Aztecas on Main Street?!?!

But again, we like the food, service and prices much better at Mexico Viejo.
