New Jersey Pork Roll

by John NA » Mon May 14, 2007 4:36 pm

For those interested I found the website, http://www.jerseyporkroll.com. They sell Taylor Ham (for those who know what it is), Sabrett's hot dogs, plus Tastycakes or Drakes cakes. I split a five pound order of the Sabrett's hot dogs with the natural casings. They came cold, but fresh, not frozen, all linked together.

Taylor ham is a pork roll that really has no description. It's one of those things that you either know what it is or you don't. It's totally a regional thing. It is, however, quite good sliced thin, fried, and served with eggs.

I'd really love to find a place that would ship out Thumann's hot dogs but I've had no luck whatsoever. I'd also love to find a place that would ship pork braccole but have had no luck whatsoever.

Taylor Ham is for sale every day of the week at the deli counter of Fresh Market on Shelbyville Road. No shipping and handling charge either!

They sell it at Kroger on Hubbards Ln as well. You have to buy a whole little roll (sorry I don't know the exact size/weight) for about $10!!

Santa brought my husband one in his stocking.... :D

Of course finding the proper roll for the taylor ham, egg, cheese, salt, pepper, ketchup has proven to be a bit more difficult!

Oh wow. I'll have to hit fresh market. I've actually found it at Kroger's in New Albany for the little $10.00 roll. My family, none of whom grew up in the Garden State thought I was crazy with my 'delicacy.' But it was great. Now if I can find a New Jersey bakery around here which makes really good hard rolls...

Hard Rolls

by Suzi Bernert » Mon May 14, 2007 9:14 pm

Lotsa Luck on the hard rolls, I've been here since 1980 and have not found any. I bring them back (and bagels) when I visit my daughter in NJ and have made a few when I had the time. I did find after all these years when I have Taylor Ham, it has to be the name brand, not the store brands in Jersey - too greasy. Now if I could just find somewhere to get chipped, chopped ham.......

The roll at Kroger's is 1 pound.
When people ask what pork roll is, I compare it to Spam - but instead of more white specks than pink secks, pork roll is more pink with a smoky/hickory flavor.

Like SPAM? No way!!! It is so-o-o-o much better than that! First of all, it's made of ham. Here is a Wiki link with a picture and a better description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pork_roll.

BTW are you sure about that price at Kroger's? The price on the website, including shipping, is almost $3.00 cheaper per pound.

Not like spam in the least. The price at Kroger's is accurate. I purchased a roll there a few weeks ago and it was $10.

I agree that Taylor Ham is better than Spam, it is just hard to find anything that it is like to compare it to when someone doesn't know what it is.

In college after a long night out, we used to hit the local diners and get a Taylor Ham sandwich on a hard roll, occasionally with a fried egg and a mess o' fries! Good healthy heart diet food!

There is a Thumann's dealer in the Louisville area. If you want to give me a call at the restaurant at 502.540.9975 I'll see if I still have his card...

Wanna guess how long it's been since I heard or saw "braccole"?
