Caterering for a Company Event/Barbeque?

by Deb Hall » Tue Jun 09, 2009 10:13 am

Folks,

I am planning a company " Grand Opening" event for our new US HQ building next month and would love your input. About 150 people ( employees, family and suppliers, possibly some media), probably in an outside tent in the late afternoon/ early evening. We are celebrating our success the past year, so I want something nice ( and have budget), but it's also a family event so I don't want anything formal. Should include service, and excellent food, is of course a requirement. I'm already checking into Lady Fingers catering (it's right around the corner) but looking for additional suggestions.

Thanks,
Deb

Marks Feed Store caters. I attended a wedding reception catered by them and it was delicious.

Kingsley's caters as well. They'll bring one of their smokers and do a whole pig for you.

I'll second that.

We've had Kingsley's do several company functions and have always been pleased. We found out during the last one that for a reasonable up charge they will add grilled filets to the menu. Having grilled a good many of their filets at home that will be on the menu next time.

We've had Lunch Today in Jeffersonville, http://www.bajcatering.com/lunchtoday.htm, cater several lunches and they've done a great job. May be a little down scale for what you are looking to do, but their parent company looks to do higher end functions.

Definitely go with the whole pig! No matter where you decide to get it from it will be great eating and a much more interesting overall presentation than just having barbecue in serving trays! I've had Kingsley's before it was very good although I'm sure there are others they can also do the whole pig for you.

Make sure whoever does it brings the entire pig on a cooker to your event so everyone can experience it. It's also fun and to do a little pig-pickin right off the carcass!

Decision from the committee is that as our customers are largely European, we'd like to focus on local Kentucky foods and something a little different. ( I swear I did NOT influence them  ) The whole pig idea is a great one that we really like- but a little concerned about the reaction from the kids- we have a lot of little ones around here.

So who'd do great catering with a Kentucky flair using local products?

Kingsley's or Mark's would be distinctly Louisville, IMO. I've never been to an event catered by Mark's but I worked for Kingsley's Catering many moons ago, you won;t be disappointed with their food or service.

I actually did one a couple of years ago and we had the same thought about the kids (and a few wives) so we prepare some hot dogs for them. But, once they tasted the pig they wouldn't eat anything else and the hot dogs were never eaten! It's really a very fun meal that everybody can enjoy.

Deb,

We would be happy to talk to you about your event. Our restaurant, The White Oak, focuses solely on KY products. Our beef is from Foxhollow Farms, chicken from Barr Farms and Earth's Promise, KY Bison products, etc.. All produce is from KY. The co-chefs and owners would happy to meet with you to discuss your event.

Contact information: Chef Allen Heintzman 583-4177.

Thanks all- great suggestions. I've already found several contacts that I would not have immediately thought of.

Just to clarify: While I'm a huge proponent of truly local KY foods, what my owners are thinking of "Kentucky foods" is a menu incorporating some uniquely Kentucky foods ( a la country ham/ hot brown/ bourbon basted, etc) in some way.

Thanks,
Deb
