Nightly Specials and Student Discounts

by Paul Mick » Wed Jun 03, 2009 2:50 pm

So I'm currently editing the Medical Student's Unauthorized Survival Handbook (MUSH) for next year's class. Obviously I'm putting a great deal of TLC into the section that involves the city of Louisville itself and its dining/bar scene. It currently is an appalling mess and lists a number of restaurants that have either moved, changed their name, or simply gone out of business.

Therefore I'm putting out a call to find out what good places there are around Louisville that offer nightly specials and student discounts. We're all trying to dine on a budget, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many of these people will have only visited Louisville once or twice before, and unfortunately that usually means that they know nothing apart from the tourist traps and chain spots. From that perspective, I'll welcome any advice you have about the city, including where to get a hair cut, what to do on a date, and which bars are the best. I have my own opinions about all of these things, but there's a reason that the chimera is such a fearful beast beyond the fact that it breathes fire. (read: it has more than one head)

Thanks a lot in advance. If I can make this edition fairly comprehensive, then hopefully it will be used to inform new medical students for years to come.

Paul you have your hands full!

Impellizzeri's has a Bellermine student discount, so I guess we need to have a UL discount. I'll get on that right away!

Nightly specials: Monday 1/2 price apps- Tues 1/2 price hoagies- Wed 1/2 price wine
We just changed our entire wine list. We also have drink specials and beer specials.

We are also getting ready to start a seasonal menu, 3-4 new pizzas and 2-3 new salads. We will change this every 3-4 months.

1381 Bardstown Rd 454-2711
4933 Brownsboro Rd 425-9080

Both locations have outdoor seating.

Good luck on the project, let me know if you need anything else.

One other thing dine-in/carryout only. No delivery.

On Wednesday nights, Sweet Surrender does "Girl's Night Out." Women can get slices of cake for just $4.00.

However, we always offer $2.00 bottomless cups of coffee and have free wi-fi. We tend to get a lot of people who like a quiet place to study because of this.

When I was in medical school the survival guide was limited to alcohol (in any form), caffeine (in any form), and nicotine (in any form). My late night study haunts included the White Castle at Bardstown and Eastern Parkway - the coffee was good and cheap. Real restaurants were never part of the experience. The Jewish Hospital Physicians Lounge was always a place to load up on some calories for free.

Many (if not all, I cannot speak for some of the privately owned stores) J. Gumbo's offer $1 off your entree with a valid student/military ID. (Hence a $5 bowl is then $4!) I know the locations at Frankfort Ave., 4th Street Live, Lyndon Lane, and Central Station give said discount.

I guess the times have changed a little bit since then. The Heine Brother's at Bardstown and Eastern is now much more popular than White Castle, and I'm fairly certain that most of the class doesn't smoke. However, the alcohol remains pretty much the same to this day.

Thanks for the help so far everyone. I suppose it would also be helpful for you to make a list of places I've already got on the list as well. Let me know if you can think of any glaring omissions.

Maido's Happy Hour and Super Appreciation menu
Tony Boombozz Happy Hour and late Happy Hour
Varanese 1/2 price apps and draft beer on Sunday evening and Wine Down Wednesday
Flanagan's Beer Nights on Thursday's
Cumberland's Cask-Conditioned ales on Thursday's, 1/2 price growlers on Mondays, etc.
Liquor Barn's Wine Tastings once or twice a month on Thursday's (and 15% off wine)
Restaurant.com and Diningwithsteve.com
Any Indian Buffet (who needs a discount?)
Discounted Heine Brother's baked goods in the evening
Downtown and Highland's VIP Cards
Various discounted wine nights (I'm using the thread that was posted on that topic back in January)
All of Dublin Cellar's nightly specials

I feel like I know of more, but that's all I've got off the top of my head. Thanks again for your help!
