We aren't too cool for Hot Dog Carts, are we?

by Reagan H » Tue Jun 02, 2009 12:06 pm

Soooo, on my day side of things, I am downtown all day, and sometimes Bardstown Rd is far, so on nice days, I love me some hot dogs carts. My partiality is to Red's (he also has cheese dogs, cheese in place of the meat, in the same yummy hand-dipped batter) and to Cazbee's, both of whom entertain while you wait.

Now, anyone else out there have suggestions? Variety, price, locale, and oh yeah, personality. Let's talk about downtown for a minute...

Sorry I can't help with downtown, but a couple of East End Lowe's have traditional NYC-style hot-dog carts with name-brand hot dogs - Sabrett's at the one near Costco and, I think, Hebrew National at the one on Hurstbourne.

I'm not sure of the name (may be one of those you reference above), but the guy close to the courthouse (corner of W. Jefferson and 6th) is good.

The guy next to the courthouse has a good selection of hot dogs and sausages. Now that I think of it, Louisville is lacking in the lunch cart territory... Are hot dogs all we got?

Don't know the name, but the guy who runs the cart at 4th and Liberty on weekend nights late is pretty good. Nice guy too.

(Deep breath)

Go West, young man. I spend more time than is safe driving in Louisville's north West End during my lunch break with my husband, and the variety of the food and the methods to convey said food amazes me. A unique and interesting thing I have learned in my working year in this area is the unfortunate turnover from one business to another. While it is sad for the owner, it has provided some very interesting takes and varieties of vendors and businesses and some very good, never to be replicated again tastes.

Also, Butch at Reds (solid stand at the corner of MLK and 6th I think? someone that knows help me, 2 blocks down from Caviar) offers sides such as beans and potato salad, if I think rightly. I haven't tried them yet, finding the dawg (from whatever city I chose) chips, and canned soda and the park across the street to be filling enough.

And did I mention he makes corndogs with cheese? And then proceeds to fry them? And gives them to you ON A STICK?

Eating cheap is once again back in fashion. As is home gardens.

I was in Manhattan week before last and some street corners are almost like mini food courts...a blend of enticing aromas.

You had to bring up the pretzels didn't you? As you mentioned all the food is wonderful but for some reason I can't walk by a hot pretzel stand in New York!

We have a place in Western Kentucky that sells those called Dairy Hill, but I had no idea they were available around here. If only your hot dog stand sold milkshakes as well...

Regardless, I'll have to make a foray west to check it out.

Paradise Vending -- the one manned by the guy in the hunting cap, flannel shirt, baggy pants and scarf -- wait, no, I believe he's dressed as a pirate ...

The guy who works the hot dog cart at Lowes on Brownsboro will sell you packages of Sabrett hot dogs if you ask nicely and if he has extra available.

I believe it was $5 a pound for a 3 pound package. I call that a good deal considering I cant find the dogs anywhere else around here and having them shipped costs 2 arms and a leg.

I love hot dog carts...dirt water dogs. Mmmmm....hot dogs, the cornerstone to any healthy diet!!! They are not just for breakfast anymore. :D

Enjoy!!!
