Places I MUST try?

by TrishaW » Sat May 30, 2009 1:37 pm

Ok..... I will try most anything, save most organ meats. I know the more "upscale" restaurants in Louisville that are on my list to still try, but I'm looking for "budget" places to give a go. The BF and I are in Louisville atleast once a week running around and love to grab something to eat. We are working our way thru my list of nicer sit down places, but I'd love suggestions for every day lunch or cheaper dinner places (under $20 a person).

We love going to Vietnam Kitchen, Queen of Sheba, Irish Rover.......We love pasta. We love seafood (just not fried to death). We'll pretty much try anything once. lol (Brownings is on our list due to the article in the LEO with that bowl of mussels and bleu cheese)

So I'm looking for YOUR favorite "go to" places that won't bust the budget. Ethnic is certainly a great idea for us.

In fact, we're going to Louisville tonight to go out, and would love to try some place new for an early dinner (6ish).

Looking at your favorites, Trisha, I'm thinking Red Pepper Chinese on Brownsboro (be sure to get the "authentic Chinese" menu). Or maybe Saffron's on Market near First, fine Persian fare in an upscale environment for a rational price.

I would add in August Moon on Lexington Road (same owners as Asiatique). It's very good, upscale Chinese food in a modern/cool environment, and not very pricey.

Which reminds me that it's been too longs since we were last there. . .

I'm assuming you've been to Ramsi's? Very reasonable and wide variety of food. Tasty. I think that they, Vietnam Kitchen, and Kashmir have gotten the bulk of my dining dollars in Louisville. In New Albany, it is Rich O's, but that doesn't sound like what you're looking for. But perhaps their new Bank St. location????

Well one of my favorites that is both ethnic and friendly on the budget is the Bosna-Mak. Bosna-Mak is a small ethnic grocery with a few tables set in the back of the shop serving mostly Bosnian fare. They make what I think to be the best gyros in town as well as some great goulash. Dont forget to stop at the Jasmine bakery next door while you are there.
Located just around the corner from Derby City Antique mall they are at 3825 Bardstown Rd,but due to it being at the end of a strip of businesses the street you turn on is Bradford Drive.

And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I second the suggestion of Red Pepper.

A few other places I tend to go:

El Mundo
Maido (Happy Hour 4-7pm)
Cumberland Brews
BBC
Thai Taste
Baxter Station

Trisha,
We love Saffron, but their dinner menu is much more pricy for dinner. I'd go for lunch.

Certainly consider Cafe Lou Lou, great food, casual atmosphere and reasonable prices, leave room to try one of Marsha's desserts! Also how about Havana Rhumba and Irish Rover? They have very interesting menus and are also reasonably priced!

Actually if you want someplace a little nicer that still has reasonable prices you should try Equus or Jack's!

There are many others but these are certainly among our favorites.

Seviche Sundays- half price on all Seviches- delicious and inexpensive.
Maido happy hour- I ALWAYS feel guilty paying so little for so much wonderful food. (Which never stops me from going.)
Mi Patria on Lyndon Lane by the railroads tracks- insanely yummy tacos, etc in the back of an authentic latin grocery.
