Friday Night Bar Hopping & Sunday Night at Corbetts

by Phil Gissen » Wed May 20, 2009 1:39 pm

Not only is the food always great at Corbetts; Not only is the ambiance inviting at Corbetts, Not only are the folks accommodating and warm at Corbetts; but on Sunday nights all food is discounted 25%! Take it from some one whose tribe has understood a good deal for 5000 years, This is a steal!

Donna and I sat at the bar Sunday evening and while I was entertained by David the bartender and spoiled by Troy the Sommelier, we enjoyed a fantastic bar menu at a 25% discount. I felt so honored that I purchased a great bottle of Malbec in advance of our August trip to Argentina. I met the engaging Will Crawford and his lovely wife and realized I better get my rear up to the Westport General Store real soon to enjoy the cuisine designed by this energetic dude. It was a grand way to spend a Sunday evening.

Friday was another fun night. Annemarie joined us at The Irish River for some decent drinks. We sauntered over to Volare for some great pasta and Veal Parmesan which even Donna thought was excellent. Being Italian, Donna is quite critical of most Italian cooking. From Volare, we hit the bar at Porcini for more drinks and ended up the night at The Monkey Wrench where I devoured a Ruben and fries. Yes, I am a pig, but I sure do love food! Volare was the highlight of the evening and it joins my list of great food in Louisville. We off to New York City for Memorial Day week-end for more good cooking. A report shall follow.

The portion of your post that I'm about to comment upon may seem strange considering all of the fine establishments you named, but how was the Reuben at the Monkey Wrench? Honestly, I'm pretty picky about the way I like them. It has to be on rye bread (none of that marbled stuff, or heaven forbid white) with almost as much sauerkraut as meat, plenty of cheese, and only a moderate amount of dressing. If there's was anything like that, then I'll probably go there right now.

Also, you can't go wrong with a Malbec. I have a friend who drinks almost nothing but sweet wine, but she will make an exception for Malbec. It's a real favorite among all of my friends.

Paul,
Although I was in an inebriated state of mind, and I think a mud sandwich would have tasted good, I did think the Reuben was mediocre at best. It was rather greasy and soggy. I would not recommend it at all. However, the upstairs deck at the Monkey Wrench was great and there was an attractive crowd. I think it's more a place for fun cocktails rather then food.
