I was going to post this this morning, but thanks to Becky for asking and Suzi for jumping right in with the answers.
As one of the judges, I've got to say that every single entry was delicious, and that only a razor-thin few points separated third place from all the rest. It was VERY close. But the judges were absolutely unanimous in our pick of Dan Thompson from Selena's for No. 1. It was a fairly traditional prep, but rose above the rest on the basis of the little extra touches - light and dark meat, a little bit of chicken liver (very traditional, I'm told, and added depth to the dish), and a good generous hand with the black pepper.
It was so good that I wouldn't let them take my plate away, and ate most of it after the judging was over.
I liked Selena's on my initial review (published in The Voice-Tribune last year), but based on this guy's chicken and dumplings, I think I need to get back out to Willow Lake for another look real soon now.
