Birthday Dinner Suggestions

by Adam Smith » Tue May 19, 2009 4:55 pm

My mother and I have birthdays next month and since we've gone to Palermo Viejo the past two years, she asked me to find somewhere new to go this year. In my mind I've narrowed it down to Corbett's, Seviche or Volare. We've never been to any of them. Mom is very sensitive to spicy foods, my father sister and I aren't. If I had my choice I'd probably go to Seviche but I'm open to the other two and your opinions on these three restaurants or any other restaurant you'd suggest for a fun birthday dinner. Also any information about the need to make reservations, dish suggestions or specials you're aware of would be appreciated.

Whoa! Three great choices, certainly three of my top 10 restaurants in Louisville.

Seviche is wonderful but a little more adventurous, and your mother MIGHT encounter something spicier than she expects. Certainly not all the dishes there are spicy, but I've found a little kick in some dishes that weren't so described on the menu. Not an issue for me, but might be for some people.

For a birthday or other special event, I think I might pick Corbett's by a frog-hair over Volare with atmosphere tipping the balance between two places with outstanding food.

It's really a very, very close call among the three. You could pretty much flip a coin, if you had a three-sided coin.

I have to concur fully with Robin.

Corbett's and Volare are both EXCELLENT (as is Seviche, of course), and both have amazing, but not similar, atmospheres. Corbett's menu is a bit more innovative. It's a tough call.

My tipping point would be this--if you just plan to go to dinner and then call it a night, maybe Corbett's is your better option. If you'd like to get out and walk around, grab a drink after dinner, see some sights, Volare's location on Frankfort Avenue (or Seviche on Bardstown Road) would surely afford you better opportunities.

Tough call.

Thanks a lot guys. I've heard that Corbett's is more of an entire evening, like you said, so I'll have to see what the plans are after dinner. I know Transformers 2 opens that day, so we may save Corbett's for another occasion.

I'll keep you guys posted, and ask for menu suggestions when we decide on a place. Already the Osso Bucco from Volare and skirt steak from Seviche are calling my name, along with just about everything on all 3 menus. I think no matter what it's gonna be an awesome night.

Well, there was a thread recently about "Top 20 dishes in Louisville", but I couldn't participate because...my top 18 would be the churrascos (skirt steak) at Seviche. And your mom would love it.

Is that spicy at all? If so, mark her down for a "no thanks." I swear sometimes that woman acts like a little bit of spice is gonna kill her; looking at the Seviche menu she was intrigued by their fish dishes, seviches and whanot. The more the family an I are talking about it it seems that it's between Volare and Seviche because I think they want to go to the movies afterward. I just wish it was sooner, I don't know how many more times I can look over these menus without my stomach eating itself.

So, we've decided on Volare. I'm calling tomorrow to make reservations. Any suggestions on what to order or wine pairings(since I'm not knowledgeable about wine at all,) would be helpful.
