Oyster Crabs

by Jason G » Mon May 18, 2009 11:13 am

Recently my fiance was eating some oysters at Macca's and something fell out as she was about to take a bite. Its was a little, clear crab about the size of a nickel and it was still alive! Doing some google research we found out that supposedly these are a delicacy (at least according to a couple of New York Times articles published nearly a hundred years ago.) I couldn't find too much information on them though.

I'm a meat-and-potatoes guy in general so to me "delicacy" is synonymous with "disgusting". However she's is much more Andrew Zimmern-like than myself so if she hadn't been so freaked out she probably would have tried it.

Have you guys heard of these things before? Does a proper foodie typically consume the crab??

The Crab was probably a pea crab, they feed on algae and the gills of the oyster, I work with a old school belgian shelf and he said some people do eat them.
