Where to go for Happy Hour on Fridays!

by Phil Gissen » Fri May 15, 2009 9:03 am

Besides my favorites of Avalon, L & N, Seviche and Corbett's, does anyone have any suggestions of fun places to go for Friday afternoon's Happy Hour. Thanks.

It looks like it is going to be a gorgeous day. I'd imagine just about anywhere with a patio along Bardstown Rd. or Frankfort Ave. would be a good call. Have you tried El Mundo on Frankfort Ave. yet?

El Mundo sounds cool. I'd like to try something more adventurous then Bardstown Rd., if possible. I have been to most of the bars near Bonnycastle including Hideaway, Asiatiqie, Seviche, Avalon, Cafe Metro, Uptown, Bristol Bar, Cumberland Brews, etc. I'm a heavy drinker with a Wisconsin capacity for booze. I know I ask for a lot,but I would love a place with great people watching but not so crowded that a person cannot find a seat.

Churchill Downs is a good idea. If I didn't have to cook a ton of food for an engagement party, I'd be there.

Phil - I've got just the thing for you if you're feeling a bit adventurous. The Frankfort Ave. Beer Depot (aka The FAB-D). Great BBQ (and the best pickles I've found in Louisville). Smokers going in the front. Outdoor picnic tables. Big weird fish in the tanks inside. Definitely interesting people watching.

There's also a homemade putt-putt course & a ping-pong/beer-pong table out back. The putt-putt & ping-pong are free. Just ask the bartender where the sticks & paddles are located. The crowd is a amiable mix of old guys from the neighborhood & hipsters. Just go. You'll get a kick out of it. Pat's (next door) is also an interesting place. You can wander over to Pat's and have a look. Then wander back to the FAB-D.

I'll probably be in there at some point as we need to purchase some beer for the party tomorrow. I'll keep an eye out for the guy with the New York accent.

Phil--for downtown spots, we usually hit Z's Fusion (lounge area or at the bar), the Old Seelbach bar, and Proof for Friday happy hours. I don't believe any of them have "happy hour specials," but all are fun spots post-work on Fridays.

Also, you might give Carly Rae's in Old Louisville a try. Their drinks are well priced all around, and they have a great patio when the weather is nice.

FABD is great... good food, decently priced beer, and a nice patio. Their BBQ is some of the best I've had in Louisville.

I think Leann may have just talked ME into the FABD. I agree with everything she said. It's always been a major watering hole player for me. Maybe favorite ever.

Great barbecue! We should probably not send Phil and Donna in without clarifying that it's not exactly, um, urbane, nor typical of Frankfort Avenue bistrotim.

It IS true that one person's sense of adventure is not always another's.

Hey, the other night before having dinner at 610, we stopped in at "Woodys" and loved it. You're not going to tell me "Woodys" is urbane. Well, it is rather progressive.............

Actually, tonight we are starting at the Irish Rover to meet a couple of women who actually want to be our friends. (A first!) They are going to be there with their kids in tow. Then, I will hit all the bars on Frankfort you guys mentioned until Donna says she's tired and I will have to take a taxi home. I am a sybaritic fool.

Annemarie,
Yes I knew that which is why I mentioned I thought it was rather progressive. Gay bars are fine with me. I really don't discriminate. When you're as abrasive as I am, it's difficult to judge people because of their sexual orientation. My room mate at Georgetown was gay as is my closest friend from Milwaukee. I don't care if you want to hump a tree, as long as you are a good person. I hope that doesn't insult anyone....
Annemarie, why don't you join us tonight.......

Basically, I will be the first person there. Well, I am actually nursing a cocktail as I try to type. I will be leaving Bonnycastle in about 10 minutes. Donna is at the Vet with her baby Tizi and will be joining Anne, Denise, and myself at the Irish Rover when she returns. I would love to see you...............Hey, I'm going to feel like I have a harem!
