2008 Finca el Reposo St. Jeannet
This ancient varietal was brought to Argentina to be a part of sparkling wine production due to its bright nature, crisp citrus fruit and full body. But when sourced from ungrafted old vines grown to very low yields and harvested in June (think January in the Northern Hemisphere) the result is an amazing wine that offers crisp citrus and green apple fruit up front followed by a full body that is floral, honeyed, viscous and yet dry like a great Chateauneuf-du-Pape blanc.
2006 Finca el Reposo Bonarda
A very-old Italian varietal, Bonarda is the most widely planted grape in Argentina. Most of it is sold to the co-ops and used in large wineries mainly because the grape grows like crazy and the wines are fruity but not much else. But at Finca el Reposo they reduce the yield to 1/6th through green harvests, shoot thinning and vigorous sorting of the naturally low-yielding old vines. The result is a wine that has a beautiful color and perfumed nose along with elements of dry earth and licorice. On the palate there is luscious red berry fruit with a touch of rose petal, while the soft, velvety mouth feel makes this a very pleasurable wine.
2006 Finca el Reposo Malbec
The Uco Valley in the Maipu area of Mendoza is known as the “Land of feminine Malbec” for the wines from there are elegant, perfumed and balanced instead of fruit bombs. This is due to the huge swings in temperature between night and day which allow for steady ripening. The grapes are grown at 6,400 ft up in the famous La Consulta, an area of the Uco made famous by the delicious and expensive wines of Michel Rolland and Archaval Ferrar which sell for at least 3x the price. The wines are framed by fine natural acidity, violet perfume, abundant red fruit flavors and touches of cocoa and vanilla from the 30% of the wine that sees French Oak aging.
2006 Finca el Reposo Cabernet
Sourced from the famous Vista Flores vineyard in the heart of the Uco, an area generally considered the best spot in all of Argentina for red wine production. The Finca el Reposo is everything Cab lovers could want from Argentina - classic currant fruit, hints of mint, minerals and barrel spice, and a velvety-smooth finish that lingers on the tongue. This is the land of “cool climate Cabernet” where the wine is picked on ripeness and not on sugar levels. The fruit hangs on the vine until late May (imagine harvesting after Thanksgiving in the Northern Hemisphere!) and this slow and gentle ripening process allows the wines to develop fruit, depth, complexity and nuance while remaining balanced. 30% of this wine is aged in only the finest French Oak barrels.
