food poisining incident

by Kurt R. » Thu May 14, 2009 1:34 pm

Robin suggeted that I post something about my bout of food poisining. I am not going to disclose where it came from but I had a chicken wrap that gave me food poisining. It was about 12 hours later that I got sick. I went to the doctor and through a lab test they determined I have campobacteria. It happened most likely from cross contamination or mishandled food.
I would encourage the restaurants out there to share my experience with your kitchen staff and encourage hand washing, changing out cutting boards when processing different foods and not preparing raw foods and cooked foods in the same area.
The establishment claims no wrong doing. I wasn't looking for anything, from them, just wanted to let them know. I am only suggesting that we all take a look at our procedures.

It sure would be nice to know where this happened. It would be a shame if the establisment had a major problem and people continue to eat there.

Part of me understands why they don't want to take responsibility, with our society being so litigious, but it still does not make it right. Hopefully they weren't nasty or anything about it. I had food poisoning from a restaurant in Scottsdale AZ a few years ago. I let them know about it, without expecting anything from them. As you said, I wanted them to know what was going on. After the way the food made me feel for two days, I did not think I could ever eat there again anyway. They were such jerks about the whole thing, essentially blaming me for getting food poisoned (still never figured that one out) that I just reported them to the city health board. I even warned them that I was going to do so, the laughed and hung up. A week-long shut down and a couple thousand dollars in fines later for a litany of issues found by the inspector has me hoping that they improved their customer service attitude.

Campylobacter enteritis is the leading cause of acute diarrhea world-wide and can lead to Guillian-Barre' Syndrome. Bad water and food prep are the major transmission routes. Hope you are feeling alot better. I'm going to avoid chicken-wraps for quite a while.

I strongly agree. You could put where you suspect it came from without being slanderous or disrespectful. In my opinion you should disclose since it could be considered a matter of public health.

I'd like that, but for the record, I invited Kurt to post his story here with the understanding that he is not comfortable naming the place. Let's respect that and not hassle him about it. This time. 8)

I too would like to know where this came from. As a forum of foodies you could potentially prevent this same horrible thing from happening to other members!

Here's mine. GF and I ordered Papa Johns when they first came out with the Robusto sauce. It was the only thing we both ate that was the same that day. 12 hours later on the dot we were violently ill, I do mean violently. We called the manager and she was dumb enough to admit that they were having a problem with the shelf life of the new sauce, fancy that! I was going to have them rename the football stadium after me and take his italian thrilla villa in Anchorage, but just decided to never eat there again for the rest of my natural life.

I understand the desire to know, but this could also be a one-time occurence. I'd think the best thing to do would be to have Kurt report his diagnosis and where he'd eaten to Metro Health ( not us). It's my understanding that this is the right procedure for both people and restaurants who suspect food poisoning.
It lets them figure out if there is something that needs to be rectified, and keeps all of us safe.

I commend Kurt for communicating his concern, without going to "DefCon 1"....I had a similar occurance earlier this week that I suspect (but can't be certain) came from a well-known QSR outlet near UofL...my symptoms were very mild, but lasted about 24 hours and didn't require anything stronger than some otc medication...it was the only time I had ever experienced anything like that from this particular restaurant, so I'm willing to write it off as an isolated incident, unless it reoccurs.

Kurt,

Thank you for notifying whichever restaurant was responsible regardless of how they responded (shame they wouldn't own up). As a restaurant manager, my FIRST concern is food prep and customer safety. My crew is constantly drilled on proper handling procedures and earn a healthy dose of my wrath if any standard slips. Hence, were it my restaurant that was at fault I would want to know immediately. Issues like this cannot be corrected if they are not brought to the attention of the right people. Kudos to you Kurt, sorry you had to endure such a thing, but kudos for alerting the restaurant, despite their lack of class.

As a microbiology major, this really scares me.

Not as much for me...but for my daughter. Or, elderly grandmother. These type of infections are extremely serious in the young/old or immunocompromised.

I appreciate everyone's concern and I would (do) share the same concern. Both the establishment and Health Department are working to ensure our safety and that this was an isolated incident.
