Sandwich Shops?

by Will Terry » Tue May 12, 2009 11:59 am

I am relatively new to Louisville (I've been here a year) and I've found a lot of great restaurants on my own (with the help of this forum, friends and family)... the one thing I haven't found is a good sandwich shop/deli.

I've been to Blue Dog, and it's good (my fiancee loves it) but I am looking for a more "deli" type experience. I'm looking for something along the lines of Jason's Deli (a staple in my household already) but local with a more dynamic menu.

Any suggestions?

Also, any recommendations of restaurants open past 10 would be great... I am in the night school business program at U of L, and get out of class at 9pm, and I hate walking into a restaurant that closes at 10 at 9:30.

There are many places with good sandwiches, but some of my favorites can be found at Cafe Lou Lou. They also have a lot of other good stuff to boot. The last time I was there I got a blackened tilapia sandwich served on fresh focaccia with lettuce, tomato, onion, and Cajun mayo on the side. The bread was fresh and crispy, the tilapia was seasoned and cooked almost to perfection (a tad bit salty, but really negligible in the grand scheme), veggies were fresh, and the Cajun mayo was a perfect compliment. It was absolutely wonderful. Havana Rumba also has a marvelous selection of Cuban style sandwiches which I know are a favorite amongst many of the local foodies.

As for deli-type places, try Stevens and Stevens.

Another vote for Stevens & Stevens as the area's No. 1 "Louisville-style" deli with excellent sandwiches including the traditional pastrami and corned beef.

Morris Deli on Taylorsville Road just around the corner from Bardstown Road also gets good reviews, but it's rather small.

Lotsa Pasta is more a specialty grocery than a deli, but you can get very good Italian deli sandwiches at the meat counter and eat them in the dining room next door.

And, although not traditional delis, lunch spots like Meridian Cafe in St. Matthews and The Cafe near East Broadway have outstanding sandwiches among their offerings. In fact, there are dozens of excellent restaurants with great sandwiches on the lunch menu. Cafe Lou Lou comes to mind as just one of many.

I love Jason's Deli. Great sandwiches! I have yet to try Stevens and Stevens, and my cousin Josh works there! I've heard that it's excellent, though!

We do have some great sandwiches at Lou Lou. I love the "St. Mattie": ham, bourbon-smoked paprika aioli, roasted red peppers, asparagus and provolone. We're open until 10 on weekdays and 11 on the weekend.

But Stevens and Stevens is fantastic, and much more "deli-like". Unfortunately it closes early, if I remember correctly (their website says 10 to 4 daily, too). Your chances of an authentic made-to-order deli sandwich after 9:30 in Louisville are pretty slim, I'm afraid.

Jason Deli has great sandwiches and are loaded with meat and they also have very good soups salads and stuffed baked potatoes. Mcallister's Deli is also pretty good, in addition to the above items they also have some new Panini sandwiches that are very good. Both of these Delis have multiple locations locally and are part of national chain but they have fresh good food at reasonable prices which makes them OK in my book.

I love Lou Lou. The sandwiches are great. Meridian (and K-reaux right by it) are also lunch favorites of mine. Steven's and Stevens is great. I will give Morris a try.

Thanks!

Also, the 10pm cut off is for restaurants in general, not just delis :-). Everything seems to close earlier than I'm used to.

There was a thread awhile ago on places open for later dining. I couldn't find it using the search. Maybe Robin or someone else can track it down.

Here are a few off the top of my head. I am sure I'm forgetting all sorts of places........

Ramsi's Cafe - M-Th until 1am.....Fri & Sat until 2am

The Bristol - M-Th until 12am......F-Sa until 2am

Cafe 360 - Pretty darn late. The website says 24 hours, but I sort of remember someone saying that they don't actually stay open all night.

The Back Door - I think they serve food until 4am

The Granville - Until 1am

Juanita's Burger Boy - 24/7

Impellizzeri's - Until 11pm M-Th.........12am weekends

Another vote for Stevens & Stevens - although during my last visit there (few weeks ago) my Hot Pastrami on Rye seemed a little thinner than in the past...hope it was my imagination, or just an oversight by the prep crew...

...another suggestion is "Main Street Eatery", at 7th & Main -- very good sandwiches and homemade soups.
