Anything near La Grange?

by Phil Gissen » Mon May 11, 2009 9:56 am

Donna and I looked at a great house off of Highway 42 in the La Grange area yesterday. However, when driving around, I saw no restaurants, taverns, etc. Are there any restaurants or bars close by? The house was in a remote area, but there didn't seem to be anything within 10 miles. We drove through the town of La Grange on our way to Highway 71, and there didn't seem to be much out there..................

Phil, Irish Rover II is just off the square, but it's not open on Sunday.....and then there is the Son of the Sailor on 146 going out of LaGrange. There is also a KILLER KFC buffet that is where we head when we want Major chicken (We live east end Louisville, so it's about a 20 minute drive for us)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head

Westport General Store, north of LaGrange (and north of 42) near the riverbank in tiny Westport, Ky. Worth the drive.

I've got to tell you though, Phil: If you're the urbanite you appear to be, you want to stay in the Highlands or Crescent Hill. Listen to what your instincts are telling you: A few nice eateries notwithstanding, it's not like a city out there.

Well, these are not in LaGrange, but Mapquest puts LaGrange 17 minutes from Corbett's Restaurant, An American Place. and also 17 minutes from the Westport General Store. :D

Guess Robin beat me to suggesting the Westport General Store, but note it the same time to Corbett's.

Phil, I live in La Grange and wouldn't change it for the world, OTHER than to add some more great independent eateries. It is a wonderful, warm & hospitable place to live. If you don't mind driving (which I assume you've already considered, since Donna's commute will be 30-45 minutes) and you want to have more space to stretch out, Oldham County has a lot to offer for quality of life. I can give you many more details if you'd like to PM or call me. To me, a bit more driving is worth it to be able to escape the sprawl of Louisville.

Thank you for all your advice. Robin, I was raised in a "burb" of New York City, but for the past 15 years or so Donna and I have lived in a very modern house on 3 acres surrounded by woods. Although we are only 15 minutes from downtown Milwaukee, we love the solitude and "space." Since Donna moved to Louisville at the beginning of December, we have been renting a condo in the Highlands and realize what we thought would be ideal for us, is not what makes us comfortable. We miss the privacy and ease of owning a home that has some acres and is somewhat removed from other folks. Both of us surprisingly, rarely go downtown and other then driving to Seviche, we tend to go to restaurants that are a drive from the Highlands anyway. Also, I understand that many people here love Bardstown Road, but we hate the hassle it provides in getting anywhere quickly and safely. We are also are not enamored with its aesthetics. In order to find a home that is located on some acreage, we are going to have to head to the countryside outside of Louisville. Thanks again.

I lived in Oldham county for several years and found it quite pleasant as long as you don't have to commute into the city everyday (which I didn't). Personally, however, I would recommend checking around the southern half of the county (Crestwood, Pewee Valley, 329 corridor, etc). You can still find the quaint tranquility that you appear to be looking for, but may also be able to save 10-15 minutes when you need to go into the city for anything. When I lived on 329 in Crestwood I could actually get to the Summit/Springhurst area in about 10 minutes depending on traffic and about 20-25 into the highlands. As others have noted the number of quality eateries is sparse, however you must weigh this against how many times you eat out in a given period. Personally I would not base my living arrangements on one or two nice dinners out a week.

It is just not too easy finding a modern, California contemporary house in the Midwest.

They are around this area, but few and far between...I assume you're working w/a realtor, but if not (and are looking for one) allow me to shamelessly proffer a plug for my wife, who is affiliated w/the largest realtor in this area.....if interested, you can PM me for contact information.

Phil,

When my folks moved here from the Chicago 'burbs 10+ years ago, they were also looking for privacy and woods with some small acreage, that felt far away but actually was close to the highways for easy access. They found a wonderful home in Ashmoor Woods - off Shelbyville Road a little past Lake Forest- that met all those requirements. They only left to downsize for rettirement. You might have your realtor check if there is anything currently available.

We have decided to start our search without a realtor to begin with. Before we purchased our home outside of Milwaukee, we must have looked at 500 homes. I vowed not to do that to some one again. Even though I had bought close to 10 buildings with her for my business, my realtor was dragged through the mire as we looked for a home rather then an investment property. When we are more focused with what we want, I will contact some one. Again, finding a very modern unique property is difficult anywhere in the Midwest. The mini-mansion in a sub division is what most people want and what most builders develop in the Midwest. To make it all the more difficult, we want something uniquely different probably solely designed by an architect. We are a pain the keester!

Phil,
You will love it out here in Oldham county. Quite, peaceful and just a short drive to the city. I grew up in Louisville and then spent many years in San Diego, LA and NYC. When I moved back I thought I would never leave Louisville, but I found a great house in Oldham County and my business is good. Come out to Westport and I can show you around. I know of some pretty cool modern houses.. not sure if they are on the market but you never know.

Take a look at Old Taylor Place off 42 in Goshen, Phil. If you have to have a subdivision, it's a good one, with both wooded and open sections and some housing designs that are relatively creative.
