I just heard on WHAS 840 that the police chief of the Middletown Fire Department found the cause of the fire to be a cigarette tossed in the newly laid mulch outside the building. A fire started there and worked its way up the structure into the attic of the building and caused it to burn to the ground.

Here's the story from CJ online.

A few weeks ago I was walking home from the UofL Health Sciences campus and saw smoke rising in front of one of the buildings at Floyd and Chestnut (caddy-corner to Kosair). Somehow I was the first to notice it, and called 911. It was the same thing -- a cigarette burning in the mulch, that spread to the hedges and took light really quickly. We actually tried to put it out with the hose right next to the building, but the exterior water hadn't been turned on so we had to wait for the fire truck. That mulch burns QUICKLY!

One of the buildings I work in downtown has mulch out front and last week someone tossed a lit butt in it. Needless to say, it caught fire, but myself and others quickly put out the fire.

The Question is... Will you really miss it?. I've had three really bad meals there(breakfast). And as far as chains go... I'm sure something else will rear it's ugly head in the same spot(Another IHOP perhaps)...Valuable Real Estate=Turn Tables.....Expect another bad restaurant..

The answer is though, that because of some inconsiderate smoker who thinks it is not littering when he/she throws a cigarette butt on the ground, a business was destroyed or damaged.

If you think that throwing cigarette butts out is not littering, next time you are at a stop light or a busy intersection, look out your window at all the butts.

If people who smoke like it so much, what is wrong with using an ashtray?? Or walking a few extra steps to find a suitable place to dispose of the butt?

No question the smoker was out of line, but I am sure Perkins has been paying big premiums to its insurance company for many years, so it should get everything replaced.

I just happened to be on that exit ramp during the blaze. I was about a minute too slow to get the best shot - there were some huge flames coming out of the middle of the building:

I immediately thought of all the people who just lost their jobs. Those typically aren't the kind of positions that keep paying if you're not working, and insurance won't pay their rent.

I'm also glad no one was injured.

I wouldn't worry about the people who lost their jobs too much.. There are a glut of these type places out there. If you are worth a grain of salt, no one should have a problem finding a simular position at another establishment...Good restaurant help is very hard to find.
