Cinco de Mayo events at authentic taquerias?

by Robin Garr » Tue May 05, 2009 3:57 pm

Anybody know for sure if there's anything interesting and fun going on at any of the authentic places that Anglos without much Spanish might be able to sneak into?

Robin,

Not sure about locally.

We did our Alt. "Cinco Di Mi Oh My Oh" thang in Chattanooga last weekend. 90 pounds of crawfish, 5 gallons of Gumbo, a big cast iron "witches kettle" full of Jambalaya, 6 racks of ribs, 4 beer can chickens and a boat load of pies and cakes. It was a fiiiiiiinnnnne day.

Sorry to interrupt...

I wondered this myself... it would have been very nice to have something to do today. In the valley (Rio Grande Valley), which is what Valleyites call it, this day is big.... always something going on....

Louisville is the sister city of New Orleans and boasts the Fleur-de-lis accordlingly; yet, never has anything remotely close to a Mardi Gras celebration. And you ask if there are any Cinco de Mayo events? I am sorry Mr. Garr, but that makes me chuckle, just a little bit, inside.

Sue, two small points: Louisville's fleur de lis has nothing to do with New Orleans. It has to do with our being named after King Louis XIV during the Revolutionary War when we wanted the French on our side. We don't have Mardi Gras. But we do have Derby. :)

And we do have a surprising number of new Mexican immigrants here and Spanish-speaking taquerias to serve them. Just curiously, have you tried any of them? No, there's no Cinco de Mayo for the general population. But I'll bet our new Mexican neighbors are whooping it up out Preston someplace. Meanwhile, though, we went to the new Boombozz Taphouse tonight. It was goooood.

We dropped by the "El Nopal" in LaGrange around 5pm Tuesday afternoon, anticipating a little Cinco de Mayo revelry, but not much was happening....it was starting to fill up a little as we were leaving, so perhaps they cranked it up for the evening dinner crowd(??)....years ago, when I worked for Grisanti, Inc., I happened to be in Seattle during Cinco de Mayo visiting one of the Mexican retaurants we owned at the time -- that place was rocking all afternoon and into the evening, and I wound up helping expedite orders in the kitchen.
