Mexican Dinner Buffet?

by JimmyShaw » Tue May 05, 2009 9:40 am

Alright so I know there are some Mexican Buffets for Lunch and the Mexican place in Shelbyville has a Sunday Brunch Buffet, but are there any dinner buffets that anyone knows about?

Thanks,
Jimmy

Jimmy, the only Mexican buffet I'm aware of was the short-lived place on Brownsboro where Red Pepper is now; I'm pretty sure it was a local branch of the Shelbyville restaurant, and it was lunch-only.

If you don't require a buffet, times have never been better for Mexican food in Louisville. But buffets? That's not really common in the Mexican niche. Personally, I'd just as soon order off the menu ... or out of the taco truck.

Oh I'm with you on the Taco Truck and Santa Fe is one of my favorite sit down places, but I need my buffet.
The Ernesto's by Meijer on Hurstbourne puts a lunch one on. And their location on Preston and Outer Loop used to put one on before it closed. The now defunct Maraca's across the bridge by Buckhead's and King Fish used to put on a mean one too.
I guess I'll keep on searching.

I've been wishing for years that someone would do a Mexican Breakfast.

When I lived in New Orleans prior to Katrina, one of the local hot spots was a place called Pancho's Mexican Buffett. It wasn't really a buffet, but on each table there was a little Mexican flag you could raise to signal the server to bring you more food. Years ago there were several around town, but by the time Katrina hit there was only one remaining, in Metairie. It just re-opened a few weeks ago and I hear they had two-hour waits for the first few days. I think people were just hoping to recapture something from the past.
Bottom line, though, the food was sub-Taco Bell quality. The real standout was the sopapillas, which were basically just puffs of fried dough. There was a squeeze bottle full of honey on each table, and you'd inject the honey into the sopapilla.

When I lived in Nashville, there was a place that had the buffet within walking distance to my house....best tamilies that I've EVER had. It was a good thing I could walk home, I needed it.

Alas, I can't remember the name of the place, however, it closed shortly after I moved.

I agree that a good Mexican Buffet at dinner is needed. Along with a good Indian Buffet at dinner time.

"Pancho's" may have been a chain....I recall a similar Mexican restaurant in Houston with the little Mexican flags at each table, and "Pancho's" sounds familiar....

Yes, Pancho's was sort of a chain. We had one in the valley where i am from.... it was a buffet type thing, becuase you could eat all you wanted but had to raise the flag and the server would bring you what you asked for.... Personally, the food was not great, it was good, but what everyone went there for were the "famous sopapillas" as Pancho's dubbed them. The sopapillas really were awesome, always came to the table nice and hot, then drizzled with the honey.... oh man!

What is the name of the place in Shelbyville with the Sunday brunch? Would it be the Marimba that was mentioned?

They had a couple in my home town of El Paso as well. Kinda like a Gattis for Mexican Food. There are so many good Mexican mom and pops there I could never understand the draw.
