Number of "no shows" Oaks night ?

by Mark A. » Sat May 02, 2009 1:29 pm

I would be interested in knowing how many no-shows the restaurants had last night for Oaks. My party of four left the track without a dinner reservation so I desparately started calling on the phone. I called a popular casual upscale place on Bardstown Road at 6:00 and was told they were "booked solid" until 10:00, but that we could take a chance at sitting in the bar area which was first come first served. We lucked out. We were one the first track people to arrive and snagged four seats in the bar. The staff was very accommodating. There was a flurry of activity between 7:00 and 8:00, but by the time we left around 8:30, I saw empty tables in the dining room. Anyone else witness this at other places last night ? Owners have to hate this when they are forced to turn away walk-in business and then have the reservations no-show.

We had a 7:00 reservation at Napa River Grill, and when we arrived, not too many people were there yet; however, by the time we left around 8:45, it was packed, not an empty table that we could see. Fantastic food, too, and the server never made us feel rushed. We didn't linger, as we assumed there were other reservations waiting for our table.

We had a 9:30 at Varanese, and it was packed full when we arrived, with people still waiting for tables. Our service was a bit on the slow side (and we were taking our time), and the restaurant was still pretty full around 11:00, though we were the last party to leave, just after midnight.

Before that, I met another group at Seviche around 6:00, and it was pretty slow when we arrived, but packed completely full when I left just before 8:00.
