Great news for Le Gallo Rosso

by Jo Self » Thu Apr 30, 2009 3:32 pm

LGR has finally received their wine license! So now you can enjoy one of the best value wine lists in town. They will be operating with a limited menu this weekend, but will expand more fully right after Derby! All bottles this weekend will be $20. And if you happen to stop by in the near future, be sure to wish Chef Annette a belated Happy Birthday - it was April 29!

Did they ever find out for sure who turned them in for BYO? "Revenge is a dish best eaten cold."

There's a bit of suspicion based on how the report was made - with the exact penal code number for the law - but no culprit has been found guilty.

I can't find their menu online, but remember (and re-read) Robin's review. Has anything else changed? Food still good? DH is wanting gignatic meatballs, so we're thinking about going there next week. (I love to cook, but I make my meatballs smaller than tennis balls)

Kim, you should be able to get to it at http://www.legallorosso.com. It hasn't changed that much, if at all. And I know, her meatballs are gigantic!

I've added this link to our Louisville Restaurant HotLinks page.

It's a very pretty and artsy Website, but heavy on Flash - it's like watching a little movie - making it inaccessible to blind users and difficult for those still on dialup. It would be nice if they offered a text alternative ... or did I miss that?

No Robin, you're correct. It is flash heavy. I'll certainly mention this to Annette, though it might be a little bit before any changes happen. She's been quite busy with inspections and taking over the B&B there as well. Thanks for adding the link and for the suggestions!

After Oaks our party of 6 was hungry and failed to make reservations anywhere beforehand. Having read about their newly acquired license, I suggested LGR. We called at 6:30 and were sitting at our table just past 7. No wine lists were on the table- we asked our server and he said they had "all Italian wines- two reds and two whites." We asked what they were and he named a red varietal (can't remember- cab?) and pinot grigio and admitted to not knowing how to pronounce the other two so he showed us the notebook paper they were written on. (Schiava and vernacchia.) We also had to ask how much they were, were they available by the glass or only the bottle, etc. (Yes, they do them by the glass- bottles are $20 each.) We had the two "unpronounceables"- I thought the vernacchia was better than the schiava but for $20 I thought they were both just fine.

This was my first trip and although I'm glad they've got some wine finally, it seems that a little server education might be in order. The gorgonzola fettucine was amazing but really, really rich (I ate about a quarter of it.) Everyone seemed pleased with their meals and a good time was had by all.

Casandra, to be fair, they had just gotten their wine license this week and the wine that was available was ordered and delivered on Thursday. Unfortunately, that didn't leave much time for server education. Once the list is started and in place late next week, I assure you the servers will have a bit more time to learn what they are serving... just give them a little time.

And so far, the pricing structure plan is going to be a flat $11 markup on bottles, properly in line with LGR's great value menu. Wine by the glass should stay in the $5-6 range.

Glad you enjoyed your meal, the gorg fett is my favorite as well. :)

Jo,

I did take this into consideration and I understand why he couldn't give us a more thorough description... however it seems a quick briefing before starting service that evening along the lines of "here's how to pronounce the names" would've been good.

Either way, it'll work itself out in time and it's certainly a plus that they're having wine now!

This website isn't working for me, and I don't see it on the hotlinks. Is it down? It takes me to some legal website. TIA.
