It is also one of the few places in town that treats vegetables with real respect, preparing them well and with creativity and care, not just throwing a few grilled zucchini or some reconstituted frozen veggies on the side of the plate as it goes out the kitchen door.

I can confirm they are open and I am working hard to see that they are thriving.

We've had dinner there 3 or 4 times over the last month, twice in the last week, and they have never failed to WOW us. We are self-employed, work a lot of hours, and frankly it's all we can do sometimes to get home and get us and the kiddo fed in some acceptable fashion. Our CSA basket should start shortly and we resolve to do better, but they sure do fill in admirably in a pinch. The fact that they are practically next door is convenient, but they are worth a trip.

Robin is correct, they do veggies with great reverence (and this testament from a devout carnivore). One of the best veggie dishes I have ever had, both in quality and quantity, is the Chef's Vegetable Orgy. They do remarkable beets, asparagus, corn pudding, green beans (haricot verts for the sophistacates), potatoes (mashed and otherwise), and carrots in this one dish that also serve separately as super side dishes for all of their entrees.

One of our favorite starters is the Exotic Mushroom Strudel, often served with their steaks as a side, that is a yet undeciphered combination of mushrooms, phyllo, and a binding agent that may have some cream cheese.

They are also running specials, may be limited to early dining and weekdays only, that feature the Grotto Classics. A couple that I can recall off the top of my head from frequent samplings are liver and onions and Walleye Pike that may very well be the best fried fish I've eaten.

My family and clients have been dining there with great pleasure for years. They are a little off the beaten path of the usual Bardstown Row and Frankfort Avenue haunts, but well worth supporting.

Disclaimer: No affiliation, financial or otherwise, Just a very satisfied and long-term diner that wants to see my neighborhood joint get the props they deserve.

Doug,

I think I understand what you meant by the above, but just to clear it up for those that don't know where Club Grotto is, it's not REALLY off the beaten path. It's on Bardstown Road, 1/2 block from Douglass/Dundee (think across from National City, almost next to Twig and Leaf). It's just around the corner from Cafe Lou Lou Highlands, and really, not more than 6 or 7 blocks (if that) from the Cafe Metro (Bonnycastle) area. It's easily walking distance for LOTS of people, and in my opinion, right on the beaten path.

My point--I just want to make sure people don't think it's located out in Fern Creek or something (not that there's anything wrong with Fern Creek), and run the risk of dissuading the folks that frequent Highlands eateries from giving CG a try.

Point taken.

My point was that there have been references in previous posts about Club Grotto not being top of mind when thinking about dinner since they are not in the middle of our restaurant rows. You are correct of course that they are not really off the beaten path, but that perception had been brought up before.

In addition to being easy to get to they have a parking lot behind the restaurant that should encourage patronage by those that don't like looking for on-street parking.

But really, all of the above is about convenience. For me it's all about the food and in that they continue to excel.

Doug,

Your point is good too. For some reason they are often forgotten and overlooked when considering an upscale dining evening. Their location, while really right in the heart of the Highlands, might still be a cause. I venture to say that if they were just around the corner, next to Lou Lou or something, they would be better-remembered.

I just want to echo the sentiments about the vegetable orgy and the fact that Club Grotto makes some of the most amazing vegetables in town. I really love this dish (so good leftover and cold, too, believe it or not) and hope to see the new owners maintain the reverence for vegetables.
