Worst product ideas ever??

by Bryan Shepherd » Sun Apr 26, 2009 11:42 pm

I just posted in the "Throwback Pepsi" post and got to thinking, "What other ideas or products that made it to market were either complete failures or just did not create the bang that the creators thought they would"?

My first thought was the McDLT at McDonald's. One side was cool with cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo while the other was hot with, you guessed it, the piping hot burger. Flip them together and there you have it. I remember the burger being o.k., for McDonald's, but it did not seem to last too long.

'cool colt'
was a product made by colt 45 malt liquor (i know, i know... but it gets worse) 12-15 years ago or so.
was , literally, MENTHOLATED malt liquor.
and was AT LEAST 10-15x grosser than it sounds

i have seldom seen a worse thought out product launch. not to mention the obviously racist target demographic

So far, I'd suggest Barack Obama. It's a joke my liberal friends, calm down.

The McDonalds McLean Deluxe. A healthy alternative from the golden arches, except people who didn't care about their health just kept ordering big macs, and people who cared about their health found better places to go than McDonalds.

On a nonfood product, the Nokia NGage. In an attempt to get in the market dominated by Nintendo with their variants of the Gameboy, Nokia decides to come out with a handheld game system that also has cellular phone capabilities. A design somewhat reminiscent of a taco, and poorly designed and laid out buttons didn't help, nor did the bad selection of games available on release. Nokia tried to build excitement for the product by having paid spokespeople anonymously post to message boards lauding the ngage. These people were universally mocked due to their ineptness.

Clamada (spelling anyone?) -the budweiser product with tomato and clam juice....yummy
bud lime, miller chill...
sorry to our local friends, but Horse Piss beer - may very well be the worst beer name ever, Ever!! (the beer really isn't that bad)
and since we're feeling funny, how about Reaganomics

No need to backpeddle on your opinions, JD, this isn't the "Miss USA" pagent...

Worst product ever? I think the "Classic Coke"/"New Coke" bifurcation tops my list....but as far as a product that remains on the market which I JUST DON'T GET, is McDonald's "McGriddles"....

Hopefully most of you never saw this one. Developed by Papetti Egg about 10 years ago. The Egg Dog.
Just imagine a hard cooked egg in cylindrical form about the size and shape of a 4X1 hot dog. On a stick. Didn't quite find a home at any of our customers.

Coke Classic may have been a bad product idea but it was certainly a great marketing ploy! How many people realized that during the shuffle from Coke to New Coke to Coke Classic the formula was changed from natural sugar to corn syrup? That was probably the entire reason for that fiasco in the first place. I'm sure pretty soon we'll see another new Coke product the equivalent of Pepsi Throwback with them reintroducing natural sugar!

See, now for me, McGriddles are the fast food equivalent to crack. It's the only McDonalds product I still eat. I have no idea why they taste so yummy. (And it fills me with shame. )

I don't know if these are the VERY worst ideas, but I don't get some of the convenience foods offered these days.

Bagel-fuls? Tube-shaped "bagels" filled with cream cheese, available in the freezer section. Because you know, smearing cream cheese on a bagel just takes so gosh-darn long. ??

Same for Uncrustables frozen PB&J sandwiches. I don't get it. And for the cost of two boxes you could probably buy enough supplies to make like 30 sandwiches. (I'm guessing here but you get the idea.)

One that's just plain weird is the cheese-filled hot dog. It's probably not even cheese. It's probably not even meat. (Do they even still make these? I remember them from early childhood.) <shudder>

Casandra, I totally agree on the Uncrustables. Every time I see a commercial I wind up yelling at the TV. Doesn't help I know. Srsly, how hard is it to make a PBJ?

Back in the '80s, there was a very short-lived fad for "lite" wine. It didn't last.
