City Block Closes

by Wes P » Sat Apr 25, 2009 2:34 am

City Block closes from the weight of tax payer money to Cordish/4th Street Live. And the mayors lap dog offers $ help the day they announce the closing. Jerry, where were you for the last 2 years when they asked for help?

Help me out here, are we talking about City Block as in the redneck mecca of downtown that used to be called O'Malley's Corner? Or something else?

Ronnie, that is quite classless. Just because you don't agree with the type of person that frequents the joint, you think that gives you the right to judge?

This is about Jerry Abramson looking the other way, as he has done so obviously with OUR money. Maybe these "rednecks" are tax payers too??

In 2010, Anybody but Abramson!

Who isn't sick and tired of this mayor selling us out to external corporations?

I apologize if the term was taken as an offense. I wasn't meaning "redneck" in a negative connotation. I forget that in the city "redneck" has multiple implications, it was never my intent to judge or suggest one thing or another about a group of people. Never has been, never will be. I'm from rural KY where "redneck" is pretty much a term of endearment. The clientele I have observed frequenting the City Block establishments appeared, to me, to lean heavily in that demographic. (Robin, please feel free to remove me entirely from this conversation if you like, this totally became something I totally did not intend)

Again, sincere apologies, I'll watch my language next time.

Worst place I've ever seen a concert. Horrible acoustics and there's an elevated dance floor right in front of the stage so unless you're on that dance floor you can;t see a thing. Biggest waste of my time and money in years.

I lived in Louisville the entire time that place was in business, and I can't really say I have any regrets about not going to check it out. I am sorry to see another locally owned business close however.

I have only been there a couple of times. I didn't think it was a great place either.

But the point is .. why is the city GIVING our money to Cordish. Of course it impacts other places and not just City Block. Only so many dollars available for entertainment and the city is subsidizing one group.

I used to be a staunch supporter of Mare for Life, but will now vote for almost anybody and not just because of this issue.

I'm right there with ya. I'm a small business owner myself and my father owned his own business in Louisville for 25 years. I try to buy local whenever I can and support our local economy.

I will never again give Mayor Abramson any of my support after such a blatant slap in the face to our local businesses.

In the context of the city's support of Cordish, the sad part of all this is that the "redneck" reference is entirely accurate from a demographic and financial support standpoint. Cordish promises to deliver a specific targeted demographic (age, spending habits, etc), and gets the money.

From an economic development perspective, City Block could not make the same claim, so it doesn't qualify for propping. Voila! Corporate welfare to the max. I've always wondered what the result would have been had the subsidies been divided among local entrepreneurs rather than given in a lump sum to the corporate entity.

Greaseball stuff, folks, and "progressive" only in the breach.

I've often wondered the same thing starting with the question, "Why doesn't our local government do more to subsidize local, independent options?"

I agree with what you say Roger, and would add that I'm sure it's also related to accountability and assessment. It's easier to account for such funds and assess the outcomes of the funding when it is all consolidated in one spot. It's also easier to advertise such a spot, point people to such a spot, and write press releases about such a spot. Those who run our government would actually have to do some thinking on how to advertise and assess a wide-ranging support plan for local businesses and their too lazy to do that.

Unfortunately, such an approach turns local government into corporate government. At that point, government is pitting outsiders versus local business and no longer deserves my support. Having had two letters to the editor of the CJ published on this matter, my opposition to Jerry is well documented.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.
