Fraud Alert!!!!

by Wes P » Fri Apr 24, 2009 9:37 pm

We recieved a phone call from the hearing impaired phone service. Someone was trying to place a $500+ order with a credit card. They also wanted us to charge an additional $500, for us to pay the catering company to pick up the pizzas and serve next week at their event. They gave us a credit card number and it was denied. They were going to give us another card. So next Wed they would pick up the food and we would pay who ever picked up the food $500.

I know it looks funny from the get go, but you have a mgr who is trying to make a big sell and well....

The hearing impaired phone service supervisor breaks into the conversation and says it appears to be a fraud and hangs up on the party trying to place the order. So when you hear "This call may be monitored for qualty purposes." now you know why.

I find out later that it's the 2nd call this week.

They are trying to place a big order for Derby Week.........Be Careful Everyone!

A similar scheme was posted here a few months ago.

I get a call from these at least once a month trying to order Kristall or Dom Perignon. They always hang up when they find out I don't ship.

A friend of mine has landed on someone's list and receives occasional e-mails from sources in Nigeria announcing that he has won the jackpot in some overseas lottery (for which he has neglected to buy a ticket) and they will be happy to wire his prize money if he will provide his SSN, bank account number, etc, etc,...you know the routine.

Those nutty Nigerians!

I have encountered this same scam several times over the last couple of years at my place of business. The plan is, they prepay for a large yet simple order with a stolen cc #. Then there is often a "change in plans" and they need you to ship their order using some unheard of shipping company. They will then ask you to add the shipping costs to the stolen cc they gave you and you pay the bogus shipping co with your cc. The idea is, they give you a no good cc# and you give them your cc#. They will usually contact you through email first ,and if you respond, they will contact you via a translator service.

I got a similar call at Ray's Monkey House Coffeeshop yesterday. Hearing impaired service, etc...

After they requested fifty pizzas I informed them we don't serve pizza. They hung up....
