Fat Tire hits Indiana

by Todd Antz » Wed Apr 22, 2009 2:17 pm

Sorry for a bit of PR here, but based on the demand of this beer, I felt this was warranted.

New Belgium brewing has begun distribution into Indiana, and product has begun to hit the shelves over the past two day. Their initial launch includes:

Fat Tire - available in 22 oz bombers, 12 Pack cans, 6 pack cans.
1554 Black Ale - Available in 22 oz bombers
Mothership Wit - Available in 22 oz bombers

New Belgium always starts out with the 22 oz bottles for their initial run in a state, and slowly increases to other packages in time. Draft offerings are expected in the state in approximately 60 days, and 6 pack bottles in 90 - 120 days from the initial launch.

And of course, we have this at Keg Liquors (/shameless plug)

not about fat tire, but i noticed that founders put out a cherry beer this year? does this mean they aren't releasing rubeaus? also, rubaeus had blushing monk as a stronger version. is there a stronger version of said cherry beer? as soon as exams are done i'll have time to make it out to keg for some drinkings.

oh yeah also i saw that you guys have sprecher beers now? do you have / are you getting the black bavarian schwarzbier? i've heard it is quite tasty.

No Rubaeus this year, apparently raspberry costs were a bit much this year, so they went for a new style, the Founders Cerise. Its brewed with tart bing cherries. This is as close to a New Glarus Belgian Red as anything I have ever tried.

We also do have the Sprecher Black Bavarian in stock. It's one of the better versions of a Schwartz beer that I've had. The only better was freshly tapped in Germany.

OH that's good news. When I lived in St. Louis, I was always driving back here with cases of beer in my car for my friends wanting Fat Tire.

I just got back from Vegas, and the most exciting thing was to walk into the little grocery in our hotel and see Fat Tire for sale.

I'll be heading across the river soon.

Not seeking to burst bubbles, but the 1554 is the pick of the litter (as currently available). Fat Tire pays New Belgium's rent, leaving the brewery free to make some very good Belgians.

I had one of the 1554's tonight, and it is the pick of the litter, based on what they currently have available in the state. Nice roasted malt flavor, a little hint of coffee, but light bodied and very drinkable. Note, that does not equate to "Drinkability" . The La Folie, their Belgian-style sour ale is the best beer I have had from them period, but its very rare, and very limited.

I love 1554. I can't wait to pick some up.

When I lived in Las Vegas the best thing about Fat Tire was its availability. If you were at a place that didn't have a great beer selection, Fat Tire would be there for you. It really isn't bad at all.

Now that they're in Tennessee and Indiana, I wonder what New Belgium has against Kentucky?

Didn't it used to be here? I could swear I remember buying it in the '90s.

Probably from the same guy that your bought some moonshine from.... ie a bootlegger... :)

Seriously though, they have never legally been sold in either state until this week. That does not mean that some enterprising store owner did not bring back a few cases for sale hoping like heck that they would not get caught by the local ATC......

Maybe I'm thinking back to when we lived in NYC in the first half of the '90s, Todd. I sure thought I remembered it at the old Party Source (now Liquor Barn), though.

New Belgium is historically slow and deliberate on moving into new markets. Considering that Kentucky is pretty low-volume and now nearly surrounded by their products, I wouldn't be surprised if they are here in the next year.

I was really under the impression that until recently, Fat Tire was unavailable east of the Mississippi River.
