It's going to be the third grueling leg of the weekend's Triple Crown: Fest of Ale, the after-party at the Public House (oddly, I didn't see the most interesting man in the world there), and the Flanagan's gig.

Luckily, my liver's in peak mid-season form.

Take a bow Ashley. Even the clouds came in early enough to block the hot sun. Among the things I most liked were the tub of free iced down bottled water, the lack of lines at the taps and the rare exotic beers that some distributors brought. Tough to pick a best of show but my choice would be the Founders Curmudgeon Ale. Please make this the First Annual.

Unlike Robert (see above), I was the DD and planned to sit on the patio quietly sipping iced tea and reading my book. Instead, I had the privilege of listening to many other participants in the Beer Festival commenting on their experience. One couple was from Lexington, with their just turned 21 y/o son, another guy who was from Ashland. etc. Everyone I heard were extolling their experience and comparing all the various brews, which I found very interesting. Everyone commented on the organization of the event and the graciousness of the staff. Kudos to Ashley and all the staff at Flanagan's and all the brewers (and everyone that was involved)!!! I loved being a mouse on the DD side.

This afternoon was quite a fun time, but I'm glad I was walking.

For me, the highlights were the Stone Brewing Bourbon Barrel Arrogant Bastard, the homebrew Pale Ale and the homebrew Export Stout.

Missed out on the Chimay Blue, but that just means I had to have another couple of samples of the Chimay White to make up for.

Talked to a lot of good folk, drank a lot of interesting beers, the homebrew Green Chile beer got a ton of talk from people, some to my taste, some not. All in all, a good, but somewhat tiring time. I can't even imagine how wiped out the people actually involved in it must be right now.

Ashley & Crew please take another bow! A very nice fest. I too enjoyed the ice cold free water, something not seen at most brew fests. Everyone I spoke with had a great time. I do have two suggestions: 1. sample glass size was the smallest I've ever seen at a brew fest, very hard to pour into and heard several comments about not being able to properly smell the beer 2. If your charity is called Pints for Prostate the people manning the booth should be wearing latex gloves

Again, excellent job, excellent mix of beer and people.
Cheers,

Thanks guys, we really appreciate all the support! Yeah, that's not the first time I heard that about the tasting glass :-) It's a learning experience. Next year (and there will be a NEXT YEAR) I will know what worked and what didn't with this year, and will be able to make changes. Good turn out though, and even with the small glasses, everyone seemed to have a great time!

My LEO column on Wednesday (this week) concludes with a consideration of the dual fest weekend. I think it would be a good idea to have both Fest of Ale and Flanagan's Fest on the same weekend again next year, with another event thrown in to make it into a metro beer weekend.

Just a thought.

Roger, for once I am going to disagree with you. Having the two festivals in the same weekend surely cost both myself and Ashley attendees, as most people made the decision to do one or the other. There is only so much money per weekend that most people will budget on beer festivals in one weekend. I talked to quite a few people that made the decision to go to one or the other event, but not both. That being said, I do know a handful of people that did both events.

I originally agreed, but the evidence suggests otherwise.

If the two are separate and completely autonomous then yes, perhaps there is a problem. But I think Yours drew yours, and hers drew theirs. One is a liquor store showcase, the other on-premise. If the two are linked conceptually together and a Saturday evening event (for season ticket holders only) thrown into the mix, then there has been value added to the weekend as a whole.

There are a million people in metro Louisville. Last year, there were good crowds for both Brew at the Zoo and Volksfest, and on the same day.

Do a full weekend of events, and you'll get more breweries and reps involved. Pretty much all of them agreed with this. I just think there's an opportunity to do a weekend event on multiple campuses rather than one big event at one site.

Just a thought.
