Thunder over L'ville - Live Feed

by Steve P » Sat Apr 18, 2009 2:48 pm

I have the great misfortune of spending "Thunder" weekend out of town on business. This afternoon I discovered that WHAS is carrying a live video feed of the festivities. Think I'll spend at least part of the evening watching you all enjoy the festivities. Looks like an awesome crowd and I'm glad to see the weather has decided to smile on L'ville for such an awesome celebration (they are already estimating the crowd could top 750'000 by tonight). If anyone reading this is in the same boat the link to the live feed can be accessed on the WHAS website.

Due to my adversity of being in large crowds - way too many years for working Thunder and other Derby events - I will watch it all at home. we have the advantage of being close enough to see the higher fireworks and air show from our side yard and wel put the TV on, put it where we can see it from outside and sit in the yard with no crowds!! Then we watch the traffic leaving downtown for several hours.....

I'm going to go out and eat. I bet I get a good table without reservations!

How did that work out, Mark? In an interesting way, this is an economic aspect of Thunder that doesn't get close examination: Most of the 750,000 revelers picnic on the spot and leave local businesses treading water on a Saturday that might otherwise have been busy.

Robin,

Restaurants might have taken a hit (compared to a "normal" Saturday) but I'd be willing to bet that the overall local economy benefited a great deal from "Thunder".

You bring up a good point though and I am reminded of two football seasons ago when we were in the middle of our one year sentence in purgatory (Oklahoma). The Oklahoma University (or as thay say down there "Oh-Yewwww) football team had the privilege of being scheduled for four "prime time" night home games that season. The restaurant industry absolutely tanked those four weekends. On a positive note, non-fans like Becky and myself had our choice of the finer tables in town (and in this case I use that phrase VERY loosely).

BTW, I caught most of the fireworks via the live feed. WOW !!!! L'ville knows how to throw a party don't they ?

After lots of indecision we went to Dakshin. We wanted to stay away from the downtown traffic issues. Got there about 7:30 pm and there were 2 other tables. We had our usual fabulous meal and when we left I think there 4 tables occupied. Looked like a Tuesday night as opposed to a weekend. Service was great as well. Also noticed several folks at Las Gorditas.

Agreed. It was my first Thunder of Louisville and it exceeded all expectations. I watched the television replays of previous years earlier in the day. Television does not do it justice.

Its tough to improve upon, but Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" would be amazing as the music backdrop next year.

I had the great privilage of hanging out with some of my beer bretheren at the Craft Beer Tent at Rocky's/Buckhead on the Indiana side of the river. We poured alot of great craft beer and enjoyed the beautiful weather with a pint of fine ale never leaving our hands. If anyone is thinking of heading down to Thunder next year, your money couldn't be better spent. Plus, as if great beer isn't enough of a draw, we had a completely unobstructed view of the 2nd Street Bridge and the Louisville Skyline.
Life is too short to drink cheap beer.
