derby question.....

by Becky M » Fri Apr 17, 2009 11:48 pm

i know this isnt in the right place....but it seems to be the topic as of late.....

i am very confused when i hear derby stuff....especially people saying i will be in the "infield" i always wonder what it is.......and....i just read Marsha L. say :

But dude, seriously - if you've never been to the infield I think you may just need to be flexible and see what the day will bring. As for wanting wine with dinner - I hope you can still ingest alcohol after a day in the infield. Many folks are down for the count as soon as they get home from the track.

makes it sound like it is some crazy thing.......can someone please enlighten me.....

thanks.........

and most folks in the infield don't see a horse all day.

The CJ usually publishes a map of the infield. There is the family section--fairly safe. And then there is the euphemistically entitled "college" section . . .

Having been to the infield many of the years this decade, the 2000 and 2001 Derbies were much crazier than anything that came after. One reason for that shift is the prohibiting of coolers following 9.11. The infield was really just never the same after that and the crowds were down (even if Churchill's "official" attendance figures don't reflect that). Now that coolers are being let back in this year*, I'm interested in seeing what type of party develops. But no, I'm not going to go to find out. I've made my way from the first turn to the fourth turn, and, in doing so, I think I made my way out of the Derby infield for good.

Regardless of the policy on coolers, outside alcohol has never been permitted. It's just much easier to sneak in alcohol when coolers are involved.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.
