Having been to the infield many of the years this decade, the 2000 and 2001 Derbies were much crazier than anything that came after. One reason for that shift is the prohibiting of coolers following 9.11. The infield was really just never the same after that and the crowds were down (even if Churchill's "official" attendance figures don't reflect that). Now that coolers are being let back in this year*, I'm interested in seeing what type of party develops. But no, I'm not going to go to find out. I've made my way from the first turn to the fourth turn, and, in doing so, I think I made my way out of the Derby infield for good.
Regardless of the policy on coolers, outside alcohol has never been permitted. It's just much easier to sneak in alcohol when coolers are involved.
