Hamburger Helper

by Phil Gissen » Fri Apr 17, 2009 6:40 pm

All right guys, I need to delve into your expertise and knowledge of good food.

Where can I find Louisville's best burger?

I'm not talking about a fine dining restaurant that produces a good burger such as Jack Frys or Proof. I am looking for a place that specializes in burgers and is not a chain or a fast food restaurant. I know there is something out there...............More often then not, it is a bar and grill that also has great drinks and collegiality. Thanks

W. W. Cousins looks like it could be a chain but it's not. It's a local family type place that specializes in burgers. They bake their own bread and have a toppings bar. On balance a really good burger.

The Bristol Bar and Grill at multiple locations serves up a great burger and has a full bar.

The Bambi Bar on Bardstown Road does a "Bambi Burger". More of a neighborhood bar type place.

For a cheap but pretty decent burger I like Resh's Tavern on Eastern Blvd. in Clarksville. Good soup and chili and grilled cheese. This place is an old bar that does a good lunch business for the neighborhood. Plus it's a package liquor store.

Uptown Cafe on Bardstown Road has the best burger in Louisville. Dundee Tavern is my second favorite.

It's actually the Granville Inn on Third Street. Several different hand-pattied third-pound burgers with a side at a reasonable price. College place, at least eight decent beers on tap. Used to be everyone in the place smoked, including the servers. Now everyone sits quietly and thinks about going outside for a smoke. Good burgers, a Louisville winner.

I always hear good things about the Granville burger. And I can attest to their turkey club from years ago, so a bar kitchen that produces what I had - real roasted turkey layered with care - has to be doing something right. But Uptown Cafe has the tastiest burger I've ever had. I have a feeling you won't hear many people agrue with that. Have you been to the Uptown yet? It's pretty high quality at a fair price.

I've heard luscious things about Uptown's. My favorite is the Back Door's.

Phil,

The last time this subject was discussed the thread very much resembled this one (i.e. no consensus). So after reading the replies I made the decision to set out on my own little burger pilgrimage of Louisville. I carried with me no "childhood memories", no "back in the hay day" recollections and no allegiance to any neighborhood, I simply wanted to discover the best burgers in Louisville . I made the decision to categorically rule out anything remotely "foo-foo"...No funky buns, no silly Asian veggies, no ground ostrich, bison, goats tongue or other mystery meat. Based on several dozen replies I narrowed down my burger destinations to six. Since that day I have had the opportunity to try five of these establishments (one to go) and in each restaurant I ordered the same thing...a cheeseburger with "the works". Out of respect for differing opinions I won't go into the names of the places (other than to say I've enjoyed five tasty burgers) but I will tell you that so far....hands down...the best burger that I've tasted in Louisville is......

Comedy Ollie's Trolley vote

I love me a good Ollieburger with cheese and extra sauce, but I can only handle one about every six months or so.

Flanagan's does pretty good burger specials most nights, and the regular menu burgers are tasty.

I want to thank you all for your responses and I apologize if this question of Louisville's best burger is "old hat," "weak sauce," passe and already done. I will continue to try to make my posts provocative and prickly in order to create the correct animosity and angst that has been missing from my life since my Mother sadly passed. (By the way, I am joking, so don't be perplexed by these comments.)
