If this event is succesful and efforts to stop mountaintop removal is achieved, will the profits from this event go to job training for those who lost their jobs or directly to putting food on the table of their kids?

Hey, I just posted the announcement. If you're so knowledgeable, however, why not attend and raise this issue with the good folks from Kentuckians for the Commonwealth? I'm sure they would be happy to try to respond to your questions.

I heard from a reliable source that all the profits are going to go to the official KFTC hippie-hash purchasing fund. Just another hippie pinko-leftie afront to the American way. ;)

Jokes aside, if you put the funds that the mountaintop removal opponents have next to the legislative funds and clot of the energy companies you would have the perfect representation of the old saying "a mountain and a mole hill." No pun intended.

Wow - some pretty cynical comments here on the event. If you don't mind that coal companies are blowing the tops off mountains and filling streams with rock, you are definitely on the winning team for now. There's even a competing event with Charlie Daniels that you'll like. Some of us can't go along.

You got a link on that Charlie Daniels event?

Cynicism aside, they did say there would be sidewalk "BEER vending." Regardless of your views on mountains or  (for you Matthew), supporting local breweries is always worthwhile and fun.

The irony and slapstick has gotten the best of me in this thread. That or my reading skills are shot at the end of the semester. My original post was totally meant as a friendly smart-ass comment to try to soothe J Dylan's concerns. I never meant the post to be cynical, so I guess I should have kept that extra-smiley face at the end.

Maybe this will clarify my stance; the only people who get to make pinko-leftie jokes are pinko-lefties themselves.

Hey guys,

I understand the joking :D , but let's get back to the message of this event. My DH is from Eastern Kentucky - smack in the middle of mining country- with many relatives being miners ( both past and present). Mountain Top removal mining has the potential to destroy an area, it's environment, and downstream lands that have been in families for generations.

I encourage you to go to the event and hear what's happening for yourselves and form your own opinions.

My father was born & raised in Harlan. I was born and raised in Corbin. I strongly encourage people to take a day trip down to the area to see it for themselves. It's not just mountaintop removal. It's also strip mining and all other forms. Unfortunately, mining has also been the sole source of income for many of the Eastern KY families for generations. It's a complex issue.

I wish I could be there. I encourage everyone to become educated on this issue. Check out KFTC website. Some of the most pristine wilderness is simply being devestated on a scale larger than you can imagine. I am not completely opposed to mining but there has to be a better way of extracting coal. Both of my grand fathers were coal miners for some time so my heart is near and dear to this issue. It is a very complicated but not one that can't be understood and made better if informed minds come together.
Advance confidently in the direction of your dreams and endeavour to live the life which you have imagined and they shall meet with unexpected success. HDT
