I googled up the following for anyone else who had no idea...
Margarita Island- Pearl of the Spanish Caribe!
Margarita is often called the Miami Beach or Cancun of Venezuela. Cruise Ships call home on the barren, west end filled with cactus and desert mountains, and airlines arrive from Florida and South America into the island filled with beaches, rain forests, reefs and big city restaurants, attractions, traffic and noise!
The island is 40 miles by 19 miles and covers 440 square miles, with over 100 miles of beach just 24 miles off the coast of mainland Venezuela. The island features over 50 beaches and the surrounding waters were filled with sea pearls- so rich- that Spain forced native Indians into being pearl divers, and shipping the pearl treasure to Spain. Columbus arrived here in the 1500’s and there are historical forts and cathedrals that can be visited here dating to the 1550’s. The main city of this island of over 350,000 people is Porlomar but the modern gem can be found in the beach resorts on the north coast of Playa Caribe, Juangriego, Playa la Cruz, and the most popular and trendy place- Playa El Agua. The south coast is one of the best windsurfing spots in the Caribbean and the island terrain is great for hiking, riding 4x4s, hang gliding and bird watching.
