Is this gross...

by Jay M. » Fri Apr 10, 2009 10:31 pm

or is it just me? We went to Cafe Lou Lou Deux tonight and took seats at the bar. The sole patron at the bar when we arrived was a gentlemen sipping a beer. He had a small paper cup next to his drink. Apparently, he was indulging in a little "chew" or "dip" or whatever the term is for smokeless tobacco, and the cup was to receive the stuff that was nastier than the tobacco stuff itself.

We briefly considered moving because I knew I could not enjoy dinner as the gentlemen expectorated nearby. We waited to order and thankfully, he soon settled his tab and left (leaving said cup on the bar, of course). Understandably, the bar staff was not pleased, and there was some debate over who would dispose of the vile container. It was suitably removed and we were able to proceed with ordering and had a very nice dinner.

Yeah - that's gross. All long long time ago, I helped a friend clean up after a party he had the night before and I had the pleasure of emptying the one beer can that... ewww. I'll never forget it. I barely survived it. And I'll forever be grateful that things like that in my generation are few and far between. Used to be commonplace from what I understand in tales of yore.

How can there be laws against smoking, yet this can go on? Totally gross . . . . plus.

Totally off topic, but Jeffrey D. - I'm still amazed at your swirling glass of wine... (I threw the elipsis in for Marsha because I found out today that she loves them.)

The least he could have done would be to remove his cup of expectorant and dispose of it in the proper recepticle...the fact that he's chewing tobacco wouldn't really have offended me...after all, he's the one risking mouth cancer.

Him leaving the cup is pretty rude, but I don't really have a problem with it.

Many years ago I was training for a month in an inpatient psychiatric unit. One of my fellow students chewed tobacco and constantly spit the debris in a disposable coffee cup. One day I was at the nurses station and his tobacco juice cup was sitting on the counter - he was writing his notes; he turned away for a few seconds and a schizophrenic lady walked up, looked in the cup, and downed the contents real fast before any of us really noticed or could say anything. She didn't even flinch and went right on her way. Needless to say I was sick to my stomach the rest of the day.

When I covered the Kentucky House of Representatives back in the late '70s and early '80s, I discovered to my amazed amusement that a significant proportion of the boys - especially the Appalachian contingent - did this very thing, keeping the cups handy on those old antique legislators' desks that look so elegant on KET ...

Thanks, Jackie. I don't even remember where it came from. I certainly have no avatar making talent. I did a search of images on my computer that were small enough to qualify as an avatar on this board, and there it was. Just lucky, I guess.
