Teenage Dinner Idea

by Charles W. » Mon May 07, 2007 11:42 am

My son is turning 14, and since he has been excited about the coming of Spamalot for a year, and it opens the week of his birthday, I am taking him and 2 friends to see it (not a cheap birthday!).

We'll go to dinner beforehand. I'm trying to think of good ideas. He enjoys a good dinner. He's loved Lynn's since he was younger, loves Thai, Taste of Jamaica, Havana Rumba, and BBQ. His friends are a little less adventurous. So I have lots of options--I thought I'd ask on here in case somebody had a brilliant idea!

Any thoughts?

I think Havana Rumba can fit even the most unadventerous tastes. It's not completely off the wall in terms of ingredients and presentation, and will more than likely open them up to a totally different world of taste and experience. That would be my vote.

Havana Rumba is a great idea, especially if your son likes it already. I also like the suggestion of Palermo.

If you think HR is too adventurous, I'm sure one of the Japanese teppanyaki places (where they cook at the grill in front of you) would be a big hit for those guys. You have the options for sushi or appetizers that might be a bit fun for them to try, but the main meal is still grilled steak, chicken or seafood. It's also entertaining. I thought Edoya was pretty good, but not sure if they reopened. Most of the places in town I've tried (Shogun, Fuji, Sakura) are similar and all pretty good.

Browning's

Since you are going downtown anyway, one of the most overlooked places to eat is Browning's at the baseball park. It's a pretty cool place to take the not so adventurous eaters, but still the food is good and the atmosphere is pretty cool (especally for teenaged boys) and I'm sure with a little notice Chef Anoosh could come up with something special for your son's birthday!

Good suggestions. I thought of Palermo Viejo, but had bagged it because steak is difficult for him, then I remembered just now that he gets his braces off tomorrow!

Havana Rumba
August Moon
North End
Jack's Lounge (? - my only question is related to kids of that age in there... Dan or Deano would probably have better judgement.)
Avalon
Artemesia
L&N

I think all these would be highly viable options for those without super-adventurous palates, but still giving them a quality and memorable dining experience.

...just my 2 1/2 cents.

I put vegetables in your desserts, white chocolate with your fish and other nonsense stuff that you think shouldn't make sense, but coax the nonsense into something that makes complete sense in your mouth. Just open your mind, mouth and eat.
