Question re: Corbett's

by Leah S » Sat Apr 04, 2009 2:30 pm

We just called because we're looking for a nice place to have dinner before the ballet tonight. The person on the phone said to plan 2.5 - 5 hours for dinner. Seriously???

They don't open until 6pm and the ballet starts at 8 pm, so obviously that's not going to work.

Did we get good advice or not?

It's a high-end, leisurely place, and it would be kind of a waste to go in a big rush. That said, I think five hours seems a little exaggerated. But - particularly given that it's way out in the East End and the theater is not - I don't think Corbett's would be my first choice for a quick meal before an evening event. Save it for a time when you can enjoy your dinner there as the centerpiece of your evening.

OK. I believe you guys. Honestly, given my schedule, life pace and temperament I will never, ever spend 5 hours on a meal. I would be dinerzilla with the stress that would cause.

We made reservations at Varanese.

It's our 16th wedding anniversary.

Happy anniversary, Leah and Gordon!

As for Corbett's, I really don't think most people would stay for five hours. MAYBE for the nine-course special in the TV room if everybody lingered over drinks, but otherwise ...

It really is a fine place for a leisurely meal, though, and well worth having the experience when you don't have a later engagement hanging over you.

We dine at Cobett's often and it's 2 to 2 and 1/2 hours most nights even with the tasting menu. Last meal we were in the closed circuit TV room and it was right at 2-1/2 hours. They do have a bar menu that I'm sure you can zip in and out more quickly. But I wouldn't consider it a place to go before a show.

My tail-bone wouldn't last 5 hours!

My tail-bone wouldn't last that long, either, Mark. LOL

please dont let others influence your decision on dining with us. we have had more than a few people make reservations lately and state that they are going to a show. We will accommodate any and all requests. i can't recall the last time we said "no" or "we just cant accommmodate that", we even let tables order ala carte and tasting menu at the same time. we are open for business, not to turn people away and just something to pass along to everyone..... when we opened, yes we were expensive, now our menu is gaged for the economy. a lot of our menu is in the 20$ range, we have a 30$ 4 course that runs monday through thursday for dinner, a bar menu where everything, yes everything is $8(scaled down portions from the ala carte menu). the patio is getting ready to open and that menu matches the bar menu or you can have the ala carte menu. just keep in mind the bar menu is for the bar and patio. The one thing I love to tell the guests is this "if you come out and find a few things you like from different options, go ahead and pair what you like, we want to make it fun and attractable for you. its about what you like, as long as we have it in stock. if im not mistaken there was a song that had this lyric "do whatcha like!"

And THAT'S another reason why this is such a great site. Corbet's is able to see what is going on in the public's collective mind and then contribute another option. I love it.

Thanks, Chris, 'cause frankly I was crossing Corbet's off my to do list with the lengthy dining "requirements." I am just not wired to sit even 2-2.5 hours for a meal. Feed me great food, keep the courses a-comin' and let me get on my way. I should be a restaurant's dream, 'cause you're always gonna be able to turn my table! We delivered a wedding cake out to Corbet's and loved the look of the place and have been wanting to trek back out your way. OK, back on the to do list. Thanks. Sincerely.

Leah, I ate on the patio twice last year and was fed in no time at all, and the experience was a delight. I will definately be out there again this summer.

I don't have anything to add about Corbett's, but congratulations on your 16th anniversary!

we have a 30$ 4 course that runs monday through thursday for dinner

Chris,

Wow, I didn't know you did mid-week prix fixe dinners ( I've been for the lunch several times and thought it was wonderful). Is it a set menu, or like the lunch where you order your courses off the regular menu?
