I had the fortune to be able to have a late lunch with my Mom today. Before venturing out, we'd decided on a few loose prerequisites; There were to be numerous small plates of different things to try. Al fresco was a must. And keeping Louisville weird had to be involved.
We had narrowed down our choices to either Avalon or Maido. The quarter came up 'heads', so Maido got the nod.
I could go on and on and on about how great a time we had over the course of about 2 hours on their patio. It was such a gorgeous afternoon to enjoy sitting outdoors, trees in bloom, with a calm breeze that felt just like Spring (even if it IS supposed to snow next week).
The service was great. The mood was super-chill, and the food was outstanding.
We had some simple, awesome starters. One being the edemame bowl, the other a plate of assorted, pickled vegetables including daikon, onions, garlic cloves, long beans, and cucumber.
After doing some research and note-taking, we ordered four different rolls.
Our server was very helpful as well as patient with us as we looked over the menu in no hurry whatsoever.
We shared a cali roll, an oyster roll, a tempura roll with salmon, roasted red pepper, and avocado and another tempura roll with crab, cream cheese, and avocado.
With the meal, I sipped a glass of La Chouffe. A Belgian brew that I'd not tried before but certainly will again.
And as far as the cost of this lunch goes... I'm not going to give a number, but I WILL say that the value one gets for their dollar there is ridiculous. I left feeling like I hadn't paid enough compared to how delicious, clean, and beautifully prepared evrything was.
All in all, it was a truly great day due, in large part, to the folks at Maido.
Also... a shout out to North End Cafe' for the REALLY nice cheese plate, and service, we shared while waiting for Maido to open.
