Le Relais Fantastique Again!

by Phil Gissen » Thu Apr 02, 2009 9:09 am

We had dinner at Le Relais last night and had a simply wonderful experience. Wednesday is duck confit night, and I am rather critical of poorly prepared duck confit. Le Relais created a wonderfully crispy version of confit that reminded me of the best bistros of France. The rhubarb tart was so excellent, that we picked up two to go after eating dessert! I know, we're foodaholics!

The ambiance is wonderful at Le Relais, and the Bowman Field location works well. Anthony, the Swiss owner, is charming, chic, and welcoming. Sunday nights include a jazz combo with the marvelous food.

This is another Louisville restaurant treasure that ranks right up there with the best French bistros in the U.S. Donna and I feel the food that emerges from the kitchen at Le Relais is superior to the meals we have had at Milwaukee's Coquette Cafe, owned and operated by Sandy D'Amato, a James Beard award winner.

My grandparents celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary at Le Relais last week!!

They moved to Louisville from Cincinnati within the last year, and they are still loving trying the fabulous restaurants in Louisville. I called to wish them a happy anniversary - and they were actually at Le Relais at that moment, so I tried to get off the phone as quickly as possible. I still need to get the details on their dinner, but my grandmother said "I hope that one day you and Mike are lucky enough to celebrate your 66th anniversary at such a nice place like this!"

Well, grandma - we got married too late for that. But if I am HALF as active as they are at the ages of 90 and 87 - I will be ecstatic!

Phil,

Glad to see that "single income", "cost cutting", "vigilance" is working out for ya. <insert winking smiley>

Steve P,
Since my parents died over twenty years ago, I didn't think my spending habits would ever be criticized again.

Thank you! My financial adviser is in San Francisco, and I have been asking for someone for him to suggest here in Louisville to manage my finances. I see I have found the right person.

I presume I should not be going out as much supporting Louisville's restaurants during this financially difficult time.

I will have to remember to see what is in the garbage cans to eat here at the condo in order to save money. Thanks again for your warm kindness, welcoming approach, and general acceptance.

I think Steve was concerned because the 610 wine dinner was so expensisve.

As an unrelated aside, the winking smile can be manufactured either with a semicolon followed by a close parenthesis or a pair of colons with the word 'wink' in the middle (minus the apostrophes.)

Steve was just messing around (he's exceptionally good at that! ;)), however I must say your riposte was well constructed. The part about the garbage cans was especially hilarious!

Nevertheless, I'm glad you enjoyed your dinner. I'm a huge fan of rhubarb as well, and I'm sure the tart was fantastic.

Matt,

Bingo. Where is that "tongue in cheek smiley" when you need it <G>

No offense was intended...My regrets if it was taken that way.

Yo...Phil,

I regret that you took my previous response as anything other than an attempt at a little levity. If I have unintentionally pushed one of your buttons, you have my apology (but not my promise never to push it again should the opportunity present itself)...

Concerning your nomination as personal financial adviser...Due to certain (alleged) illegal activities in my distant past...which would almost certainly come to light in any confirmation process...I must respectfully decline your offer. The dining perks alone make this a difficult decision

*applause*

That was a pretty apology, Steve. You sure do have your apologies nicely polished. Good job, Becky.

Phil, we're all totally envious of your dining habits. Steve was just ribbing you. I thought you were a New York boy?

If these activities happen to be tax evasion, you might want to hold the line and go for it anyway. That strategy has worked for others...
