Conway's Cake/Candy Shop

by Jenny H » Fri Mar 27, 2009 7:08 pm

I was in there today and overheard that they are closing. I thought that was a bummer. It was the combo of high rent and decreased sales. They always had the neatest cake decorations and would use them for my kid's birthdays.

I saw the posting on Craigslist - $55K for the business and bake shop. I know there are people who use their commercial kitchen, I wonder what they are going to do for space. I am personally bummed since that's my go-to place anytime I forget to order something and need it ASAP.

Although it's in a different part of town, I have to give kudos to MK Bryant's Cake and Candy supplies shop. They don't have a website, but are listed in the phone book. Mark (the M in MK Bryant) will even special order stuff for you, given a bit of time.

When I worked in middletown back in the early 90's, my office was right behind the shopping center where Conway's is located. They were in a different storefront at the time. Back then, the selection of pans, novelties, wedding cake toppers, etc was mind boggling!By far the best selection of any cake or candy item in town. They beat out Baker's Bazaar and Lysetta's by far with quality and selection. Once they moved to the storefront they're in now, it became more scaled down and seemed geared toward lessons and mostly candy stuff. I started going to Lysetta's even though it was further away. Then, MK Bryant's bought Lysetta's. I was already going to MK Bryant's for interesting pots, pans and utensils. Then, it started changing and they started getting a lot of non food related type stuff that seemed really flea marketish and I kinda stopped driving all the way out there. My question, has the selection gotten better for pans, tips, colorings, etc??? I wasn't extremely thrilled last time. I really like Mark and the staff and they also give you a discount if you have a food industry business. At least they used to.

For a time, Brynt's was trying to be a cookware shop on the order of Campbell's. Now they are all cake and candy supplies all the time. Pans, boards, color, candy and molds, a little bit of everything!

Very sad to hear about Conway's closing. Darlene was always very accommodating if I needed something on short notice. She even offered to deliver stuff to me on her way home a time or two. I will definitely miss Conway's.

Andrea had a good point. I know of several businesses that used their kitchen. I wish everyone the best of luck.

Really??? Maybe I'll have to take a drive out there. I really wish cake supply places would also carry foamcore and ribbon selections. I almost always put my cakes on iced foamcore and make it part of the design. But I have to spend extra time going to like Hobby Lobby for example. Oh well...

No Bryant's doesn't carry ribbons or foamcore. I use cake drums and Bryant's does carry those.

Just thought I'd let everybody know that Conway's didn't close! They actually moved back to store they were originally in farther down the strip shopping center near the corner where Feeders Supply is located. We didn't go in but saw the they were there and open. Not sure if it's the same owners or someone else will hopefully they still are carrying the same lines of materials they used to.
