United Plates of America

In the latest issue of "Bon Appetit" magazine, there was a section that listed state-by-state bests of dishes, drinks and ingredients that make up our food nation. These are the listings for Kentucky and surrounding areas;

Kentucky
What to buy: Colonel Newsom's Country Ham: Princeton
What to eat: Mutton barbecue at Moonlite Bar-B-Que Inn; Owensboro
What to drink: Mint Julep at the Old Seelbach Bar

Indiana
What to buy: Wabash Cannonball goat cheese, Capriole Farms; Greenville
What to eat: Sugar Cream Pie at Nick's Kitchen; Huntington
What to drink: Root beer at Mug-n-Bun; Indianpolis

Ohio
What to buy: Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams: Colombus
What to eat: Walleye with herb dumpling at Lola; Cleveland
What to drink: Blueberry ale at Rocky River Brewing; Rocky River

I had the Mutton last weekend in Owensboro. It was very good, but do NOT agree their opinion on location. Old Hickory Pit Bar-BQ is better tasting than Moonlite.

I'll have to try Old Hickory next time I'm in Owensboro. I've been to Moonlite a couple of times, but I was talking to a native the other day and he said all the locals prefer the former. Of course, Moonlite definitely has more publicity.

I forget. When does Owensboro have their BBQ fest? I've only been once but it was a blast.
