Derby Restaurant Web Site

by Phil Gissen » Fri Mar 27, 2009 7:53 am

Why don't the independent restaurants of Louisville and Southern Indiana create a web page delineating what culinary events, dinners etc. they are planning for "Derby" month? I have been trying to discover what to do during the plethora of "Derby" juncture, and I have not discovered much in the culinary world. That interests me a great deal more then a fashion show or parade. The restaurants must be planning some special things for the iconic "Derby."

It's an interesting idea, Phil. I suspect the reason it doesn't get much traction is simple: Derby in Louisville is somewhat like Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but with horses instead of beads. The whole world will be here - or a good sub-set of it anyway - and every restaurant will be slammed. They'll be busy as hell doing what they do best, and there's no particular need to create a marketing plan in a situation where the issue is not luring people in but trying to figure out how to handle all the people who want to come.

And it's hell when people start throwing those horses during the Derby Parade!

Which is where hoof-in-mouth disease comes from.

The Coding Gnomes are working on that, Steve. They got lost to the redesign, but we're trying to re-find them. If anybody out there is a guts Javascript/PHP/MySql programmer, we're taking volunteers!

Phil,

As we get a little closer to Derby, the local magazines and newspapers will start publishing their "Derby issues" with listings of all the events including parties, dinners, performers etc.

I imagine hurling jockeys would be much for efficient, what with them being so short and emaciated.

Additionally, the media is much more likely to throw (italics aren't working, but I would have italicized that) a fit if you start mistreating horses than if you starve a few jockeys. If you have any questions, please reference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_Bells versus the fact that the jockey restrooms have toilets specifically designed for emesis, and that there is an injury rate of 606 per 1000 jockey years.

Considering the amount of money made off jockeys and the deadliness of their sport, you'd think they'd make more money.
