On the Road/Travelling to section?

by Rob Summers » Tue Mar 24, 2009 6:47 pm

the past several weeks there seems to be an increase of I'm going to "insert City here" for a bit does anybody have any recommendations.

I sent a message (as seen below) to the all powerful, all knowing Robin.

First and foremost, this isnt a gripe, but an idea. I think a group/forum heading/own little place, for travelling restaurant questions.

Terre Haute
Milan & Lake Como
Albuquerque & Sante Fe
London, Paris & Chamonix
Milwaukee
Lexington
Mobile

All of these fine cities are on the first page of the Louisville Restaurant Forum. the great thing is that everybody likes to give there recommendations, and thats one of the great things about the site. I just wonder if our hometown wouldnt be better suited to have a section for all these requests, in another section, Cincy has its own section, so this is just an idea.

Robin, felt that I should bring it to the public to see how everyone felt about it.

I can see how some might go to the side of it creating another smaller spot that few people might look at, however, I feel that it would be a way to keep the Louisville Restaurants section, about Louisville.

If you love, hate, or are indifferent, lets hear what your feelings are.

I think that is a great idea. We could construct a great resource for foodie travel. People come to this site for many reasons and this would just be another enhancement.

I'm one of the guilty parties. Sorry. I also think it's a great idea to have a travel section.
The people on this forum know a lot about food, usually far more than I do, and I trust them lots more than a hotel concierge or park ranger. And I got some good replies I plan to use.

That's a fantastic idea Rob. Not only would it free up some space in the Louisville Restaurants Forum, it would make past recommendations much more easily accessible.

Not only that, but people who travel could post their recommendations on where or where not to go in a particular destination before someone else is planning on traveling there, and thus create a nice database of locations. I can also see it helping people decide on where to go for vacations.

I was actually in Panama City Beach last week, and I almost started a thread asking for advice on where to eat. However the more I heard my brothers describe PCB, and their escapades at a myriad of burger kings, I decided my quest was most likely a futile one. I'd love a place to post about such culinary wonders as the hot dog makizushi I found down there. (No, I didn't eat it.)

I love this idea!!!!! (happy face)

Sometimes when I try to search for a city to see if there has been a thread about it earlier it doesn't find it. But, after I ask about it somebody will send me a link to earlier posts. Then I just feel bad for not being able to find it (sad face)when I really did look.

Yes Robin my smilies are still not working.....it says they are on. Is there something I can do?

An "out of town" dining thread is a good idea...another option is to visit http://www.tripadvisor.com, type in the city that interests you, then click the "Restaurants" link and you'll have lots of reviews about local eateries (indies, as well as chains) from actual patrons -- not professsional dining reviews -- much like what you read here.

Twice guilty, since Jan., so I think it's a great idea. It's good organization too. CD

I think it is a fine idea as well. I noticed an increase in out of town recommendations lately myself. I travel a lot but could care less about city recommendations unless I will be going there in the immediate future. Also, quite frankly, I'm not sure if some of the recommendation requests aren't more about letting people know that you are traveling (i.e. bragging rights), rather than truly heeding the recommendations! So count me in as supportive of this idea.

deja vu all over again. I'm pretty sure we talked about this a couple of years ago and I liked the idea then, and like it now!

I agree that Trip Advisor does have some merit, but I'm more inclined to trust the opinions of people that I know, whose tastes in food are familiar to me. (Namely, my fellow LHB forumites.) The people on Trip Advisor represent an unknown factor. For all I know, they might think that Pineapple WIlly's is the pinnacle of dining excellence. (I actually did visit it in Panama City upon my girlfriend's roommate's recommendation. It was, unfortunately, both bland and overpriced.)

I suppose I'm just saying that we have a reliable and friendly community here, and I personally trust your suggestions about where to eat both in and out of town. I've already said this, but I'm definitely in favor of a separate travel forum.

Oh, yeah, sure ... sorry I haven't been in this discussion, busy week, but I was just waiting for a consensus. Looks like we've got one, so I'll make it happen in the next couple of days. I'm thinking since the Cincinnati forum isn't very active, we can just convert it into a Food Travel section.
