La Perla del Pacifico moving back to Goose Creek

by Robin Garr » Tue Mar 24, 2009 2:03 pm

Good news for Mexican food-loving East Enders: We went out to Preston Highway to check out the "new" Perla only to find they are on the verge of moving back to their original quarters on Westport Road again.

I was pretty much able to work out the Spanish notice, but ran it through Google Translation to make sure it agreed:

Aviso importante: La unica y original Perla del Pacifico
se regresa a su domicilio anterior, 2840 Goose Creek
Road cruza con Westport Road. Estaremos a sus ordenes
aqui en 4906 S. Preston hasta el Domingo 29 de Marzo y
estaremos en servicio en Westport Road a partir del
Viernes 3 de Abril del 2009.

Important Notice: The unique and original Perla del Pacifico
returns to our previous home, 2840 Goose Creek
Road crossing Westport Road. We are at your service
here in S. 4906 Preston until Sunday March 29 and
be in service from Westport Road
Friday April 3 2009.

Fantastic. I was disheartened when they moved; believed they closed. Now, I know where to go and get real Mexican food in Louisville. Though there are other places serving quality Mexican food, La Perla del Pacifico was always a favorite.

This sure is fantastic news. I never got over there when they were on Goose Creek and I rarely get over to Preston, so now I have a new chance to try all that great food I've heard so many good things about.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

I loved the place the first few times I went. Then the last few times it was not quite there. But we all have missteps. Hoping it comes back strong as ever.

About the only Mexican place of that particular type that serves good seafood. Glad to hear they are coming back my way!

That's why I hated to see it leave Westport Road in the first place!

Remember, by the way, that it's just a short drive out from Jade Palace, Louisville's best dim sum, which is also outside the Watterson; Hiko-a-Mon, which isn't bad sushi, and the Lyndon-area twofer of Mi Patria and Tacos Toreados ... not to mention Mojito, Shiraz, Thai Cafe and Tokyo Sushi at Holiday Manor and Hanabi, a very decent locally owned sushi bar in Prospect. Things are getting better in the East End, even if the chain-to-local ratio is still high.

I agree 100%...add Corbitt's and it actually amazing. The loss of Seviche was a huge blow to my family however - it had become our goto place! It's painful to drive by that empty building.

They missed their target date, but I'm happy to report that La Perla is back and better than ever! For those of you familiar with them before they moved, here's the rundown of the changes:

- They have remodeled. It still won't be mistaken for The English Grill, but a fresh coat of paint and a new wall that blocks off the kitchen give it a much cleaner look.

- If my waitress was any indication, the English-speaking proficiency went down to about zero. She was very friendly, however, and we managed just fine.

- They do have a colorful picture menu for those who would like to point rather than dust off that High School Spanish.

- The menu is similar, although they seem to have removed the tortas.

As far as the food, I was first given chips and salsa. Much better than your standard fare, as the salsa tasted very fresh and actually had some kick. I ordered the Lunch Carnitas and was pleased with a large mound of slow-cooked pork, white rice, corn tortillas and refried beans that actually tasted like beans. My entree was $6.99; looks like most of the lunch dishes were in the $4-$7 range.

Please note...they only accept cash at the moment, which they say is a temporary situation.
