I am trying to find a picture of the Highlands White Castle that was on the corner of Eastern Parkway & Bardstown Rd. The best picture will receive a $100.00 Gift Certificate to the new Boombozz Taphouse. The chosen picture will be a main fixture displayed in the location. You can mail them to TBB America, 11003 Bluegrass Parkway #590, Lou, KY 40299

Thanks, Tony

Tony,

Have you checked the U of L library photo archives? My husband (Rance -- I think you know each other) used to like to root through the archive when he was in college. He would bring home all sorts of photos of the area. I'll bet there's a couple of photos of the White Castle.

I think Leann may be onto something - I found this image of a White Castle at 1st and Broadway on the website for the photo archives. Could be worth a look.

I was also going to suggest the UofL archive. My Great Grandfather was Jim Caufield of Caufield and Shook. They were a commercial photography company that started in 1903. They had exclusive rights to Churchill Downs forever. Almost all historic photos of Louisville that you see in books and magazines were most likely taken by them. They donated over three hundred thousand negatives to the UofL archive. I bet there is one of that corner in there somewhere.

About 12 years ago, we lived in the "Bestin" apt. building right behind the statue of Gen. Castleman on his horse. Rance found at least 3 or 4 pictures of our building and the surrounding area from the turn of the century.

I just asked him about the process & he said that basically, you used to just go down to U of L and flip through photocopies. When you find something you want, they produce an actual photo from negatives they have on file. I'm guessing, that they've probably updated the process to where you can now do your search online.

Not yet but that is their eventual goal. You still have to give them an address and look through prints. Then they get a number from the print and you can order from that number. It's a fascinating place that I don't think many Louisvillians know about. I do believe they have one of the largest university photo collections in America.

And as far as the Caufield and Shook photos go, I heard that C&S used to store their negs in the basement of a building along Main St. and lost about half of them in the 1937 flood, otherwise UofL would have the biggest collection for any university.
