Beer taps at the table?

That's a pretty cool idea, I have to say. It looks like they're just offering the major domestics right now, but there's no reason it can't be used for better beers (and the artilce says they're planning on it). You'd never have to get up. Wow.

I'm a little surprised that Kentucky's draconian alcoholic-beverage service laws allow something as creative as that, but I suppose the cutoff button in the back satisfied the inspectors.

I wonder how many hours it will be before the first drunken UK student puts his head underneath and drinks straight from the tap ...

Many have already tried to leap the bar and do that very thing, Robin. So, not long.

It seems cool and all, but I too immediately wondered about the overserving issue...

They say they bring chilled glasses "periodically" and that is enough to judge if someone is intoxicated? Not in my book. I'd never allow it as an ABC inspector. It sounds like self service to me, which I thought was illegal. One bad accident and this invention will be toast. (no offense to our friends at "Toast")....but I guess it'll be fun while it lasts.

there are few sports bars in Atlanta that have been doing this for several years

my big question is how often are those beer lines cleaned??
Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza. D Barry

A few years ago I saw this setup at a bar, appropriately named The Pour House, in Dublin. There were only 2 brands on tap - Guinness and Carlsberg. People seemed to be having a blast and I didn't really notice any greater level of intoxication than at an ordinary pub. The taps were in the center of the table on a rotating platform so that everyone could pour from regardless of where they were sitting at the table. Waitstaff constantly brought fresh clean (room temp) glasses and we practiced the 2 part pour until perfection was achieved. It really is a great concept for the bar owner and for the patron. Less overhead for the bar and, for the customer, there's no struggling/waiting to get attention from a bartender/waiter who might be swamped. Now if I could just get it set up like that in my office...

Most bars do a horrible job at cutting off intoxicated customers, if doing any job at all. I don't know the law on self service, but this is not much different than pitchers or beer towers. The article mentions that the computer is set to ration the amount of beer based on the amount of people at the table.

It sounds like a good idea to me. It can help control costs and I'll be stopping in the next time I'm in Lexington.
